DFAM mind melting thread

Ah nice, looks like update via Chrome is something new they added. They’ve spruced up their web site too :+1:

A bit off-topic, but it recently occurred to me that Aphex Twin accidentally stumbled upon the DFAM sound in 1994, and on Selected Ambient Works Vol. II, no less. Check out the beginning of this:

I’m pretty sure that’s how it went:
Aphex went to the future and checked out all the new gear. Then came back and created all this futuristic sounding music.

No idea how true this is but I understand he used Syncussion a lot. I had a modular Syncussion voice (MSW SY0.5) and could make that DFAM like a good-un with modulation and cv mode changes. Sounded great!

I don’t want to hijack the thread with a Behringer discussion, but this is MY EXPERIENCE:

I had DFAM for 2 years, bought EDGE out of curiosity, compared the two side by side extensively. Sold the DFAM, kept the EDGE.
IF there are differences, those pertain to the realm of abstract perception (one sound warmer, the other has got more punch etc. etc.). In the context of a production it is impossible to discern between the twos. EDGE costs 1/5 of DFAM and it also gets MIDI sync without external devices.

Is it awful to look at? Hell Yeah! The knobs sucks? Hell Yeah! (but you can buy new knobs on Aliexpress for a few bucks). Is it the best 100 bucks I have ever spent on a synthesizer? Hell yeah!

IF you got the money go get the DFAM; it s a wonderful instrument, looks gorgeous, a pleasure to touch (except for the mini knobs, but you can buy big ones too on Aliexpress). If you don’t or you wanna buy 5 DFAMs for the cost of one, buy an EDGE and have fun.

I picked up an Analog Four MK2 last month and, while I’ve been enjoying the sound design, I couldn’t help but dust off the DFAM and control it with an Elektron sequencer. Nice to have the DFAM back in the mix. I started this track with a simple baseline and built it from there with help from the ARMK2 and A4MK2.
