Decay on Syn Page vs Decay of ADSR

Hi,

can anyone explain to me what the Decay on the Syn Page really does? What is the difference to the Decay Parameter on the Amp Page? I took a look into the manual bit I didn’t find an answer. Thank you

Regards Alex

I think of them like this:

  • on the [SYN] page, Decay lowers the energy of the impulse over time
  • on the [AMP] page, Decay lowers the level of the amplification

They’re independent. You could leave the [AMP] fully open and just use the decay on the [SYN] page. This is quite good for percussion. Or, set the [SYN] decay to INF (so it sustains) and use the [AMP] envelope to contour the sound. You can play with any balance between these two extremes.

Apparently SYN page Decay can have a different behavior depending on machines. Some can’t be infinite…

Thinking about sound design in general… most samples have dynamics baked into the data. If you play a drum sample (which likely has a fairly short decay) though an [AMP], you can “modulate” the decay, to some extent.

The [SYN] page decay means you can think of the output of the page/oscillator/machine in a similar way to a sample, when considering dynamics.

Ok thank you all for the explanation. I think I understand it now.
