Here’s a 7:8 experiment I posted in the Jamuary thread.
Analog Rytm and Digitakt; AR controlling clock and transport.
Two patterns on the Rtym; 1 on the DT.
Pattern Length on each set to 56/64.
(56=7 multiplied by 8; so each pattern contains two 7-note phrases.)
Started by typing in the kicks, then played in the hats for 1 page, copied that page across the pattern and kind of went by feel from there.
A bit cringe, but it helped to keep the bassline from “Money” going in my head to get a feel for the groove.

Unconventional time signatures are my favourite thing to study. They feel uneasy at first, then the brain and body get used to them, and now you have a whole new universe to explore. Very nice challenge!

I tried one last night, i find myself just making a phrase that ends up dividing by 4. Like i started with 9/4 and to my ears all I hear is a 8 bar phrase with an extra bar at the end making everything sound off, so i made it 36 bars with 9 4 bar phrases and now it sounds ok to me, im lost lol

I find myself down a similar path. But I’m liking the exercise - every idea I’ve started I’ve had to wade through the proverbial noise to find something I like.

I’m a bit on the same boat. I started trying out some stuff in 3/4 but let me tell you. The groove box I’m using is not made for anything else than 4/4!
I think I need to bust out bitwig for this one. Still a valuable learning experience, and the reason I want to participate in these battles.

I’m also leaning to 3/4 and using Ableton Live. My challenge might be, that I set up 3/4 and still think and play in 4/4.

This is where I came unstuck, I think my brain is just hardwired for regular time signatures, everything I tried sounded way off to me, I’m sure it’s achievable but it’s so far out of my lane I just gave up…

My idea is at the moment to stick to a 2 bar loop in 3/4 which is something like 6/8. This feels off and kind of okay at the same time. So I’m still trying but can also imagine me giving up.

I think it’s fine to do 4/4 and have the odd turnaround or drop in a weird time.
