Right on!
some people never left high school ![]()
And some people never finished!
Well, I see bikers wearing their own band name all the time.
Itās taken me decades to realize that I shouldnāt care what at all what others think. Lifeās too short.
Thanks everyone for all the awesome answers. Itās so nice to see how such a little question can carry so much depth !
I guess what makes me uncomfortable with wearing my own t-shirts is, when you wear band t-shirts, there is something implicit that you wish to connect with people that share the same passion. I mean, thatās not the only reason, but that would be lying to not admit it. So, if I wear mine, and someone recognizes it without knowing me, the feeling would be so awkward I couldnāt deal with it. But people may react differently of course.
An āinfinite regressionā t-shirt would be cool. That is, a t-shirt with a picture of yourself wearing a t-shirt with a picture of yourselfā¦
Wearing your own t-shirt could be used humorously to promote your band merch:
[to the audience] I want to apologize for my appearance, tonight. All my other t-shirts are in the laundry. The one Iām wearing, by the way, is also for sale [smells armpit].
I once had this idea when I was on tour to film the same song every night, and broadcast it as I was playing it the night after, and so on. Never did it, though.
Itās often lame.
Depends on the level of irony involved. That said, metal bands might have an advantage ![]()
greatest trick the devil ever pulled was conflating pride with ego. thats a great way to keep the population in check. when in reality, the people who feel feelings when someone else is wearing their own merch are probably the ones with ego issues.
I often wear shirts from old defunct bands of mine and that doesnāt feel weird at all, though it might if the band had recently broken up.
Iāll wear shirts for friends bands/ projects/ labels/ whatever with no hesitation. Gotta represent the community.
Some bands/ projects it can make sense thematically or artistically to wear your own shirts. Ive never been in a band like that though I remember once doing it out of necessity and it felt weird. On tour in a punk band and I only had one shirt, after a couple weeks in a van with three other dudes it had to be abandoned and the only option was something from the merch box though I did just go without a shirt for a few days.
This would be my option!
And some people donāt remember it!
This thread made me want to design a t-shirt for the only band Iāve played live with, we only did one gig in 2009 and never had any merch. Now itās time!
To be honest, I donāt wear band t-shirts because Iām afraid people will think Iām part of the band and therefore wear my own t-shirtsā¦

In fact, Iām more of a band-maker just to make my own t-shirts. In my defense, I would produce the artwork myself (and maybe outsource the music)
I donāt see anything wrong with an artist doing it.
Iām pissed off I had to put a shirt on for dinner!
Yes. In fact, I made myself custom ones cause it was fun.
Donāt even need the music. Just say theyāre one of those underground bands that refuse to do anything online.
If I had a choice (and no wife) I would ALWAYS wear my own band T-shirt. Everywhere. Even to bed.
