Hi,
Getting a RYTM MK1 in a couple of days
I’ve never used any Elektron gear before, and am aware of it’s confusing workflow to the uninitiated…
Apart from obvious wobbly pots etc… Is there anything else i should do to check it’s working correctly?
Definitely check the pads. Put it in mute mode and check each one. Same for the trigs etc. Also running test mode should reveal if there are any internal issues or not.
examine the screen. mk1 screens fade eventually. It’s not fatal but a bit annoying / might affect resale value. May not be apparent until the unit warms up.
There’s a lot to this. You hold down the function button while powering up. You select test mode with the first sequencer button. After the self tests completes there are a list of test results on the screen which you can scroll thru with the arrow keys. A plus “+” means happy. This also shows the firmware version.
Then sequencer button:
1 - turns screen “dark”, which isn’t very dark but should be uniform.
2 - turns screen “white” which again should be uniform
3 - turns pads white, the one color leds red, and the seven bi-color leds amber
4 - turns the pads red, and all leds red
5 - turns pads green, the one color leds off, and the seven bi-color leds greenish
6 - turns the pads blue, and all leds off
7 - turns pads and leds off
The rest of sequencer buttons and the rest of the buttons turn various single leds on momentarily.
The nine encoders will smoothly scroll the leds above the sequencer back and forth.
The volume knob does nothing, it’s a volume knob, not an encoder.
Use sequencer button 7 to turn everything off, then press all twelve pads individually. The pad should turn blue. Look for uniform action of the pads.
This test program is screwy, but should mostly run something like described but ignore weirdness.
You’re mainly looking that all buttons work, that all leds light, that all the pixels on the screen works, and the pads work as expected.
Go into the sound setup menu of each pad, open up the aftertouch and velocity mod sections, press (aftertouch) and hit (velocity) the pads and watch the value dial on the left of the screen. You can spot pad response problems this way. Aftertouch should show a nice smooth ramp when you press, no jumping. In velocity, you should see a good range of values corresponding with how hard you hit.
I wish I’d done this the second I unboxed my AR MK1. Many of my pads are all jacked up
OK so i got it!!! Boxed, clean with the protective cover, LOVELY!! I really like this design the most.
Have followed the advice given and it appears to checkout 100% Screen it great too, bonus!
Encoder E is slightly “grainy” feeling but works fine.
Encoder H feels sluggish when dialling in the LFO Depth but i guess this due the higher value range? Takes forever to move through the range, works fine when pushed in and when on other pages…
Thanks to all those that helped, really really appreciated!!!
Was really scared if the “Elektron way” or whatever people call it would work for me, and yes, i have sworn a bit, but i have transformed one of the presets in some Electro mayhem!!
The overdrive is very addictive for sound design, not harsh, just perfect!!!
Anyway i could go for ages, but won’t. In short, it’s great, should have got one sooner!!
Now to update the firmware and learn the file system…
