Surprised to not see more out in the wild yet.
Would love an audio clip of this filter popping.
Watched plenty of of Surco videos of him using that button and didn’t notice anything.
Check out his latest video from last weekend:
At the 50 minute mark he demo’s the filter on/off button and you can hear what it sounds like.
I’m not lecturing anyone on how to use a filter. Maybe for you it’s fine DJ-wise, and it’s pretty cool you’ve found ways to live with it based on your performance preferences. I’m not a DJ, and I might use the filter differently than just hiding the pop under a kick drum. What if there are no kick drums or percussion at all in the performance, like an ambient set?
I’m not being a hater either. I fully support the project, and hats off to Boredbrain for doing this. I placed my order the moment the pre-sale went live. That said, a pop when switching the filter on/off is not something I’d expect in a brand-new, state-of-the-art €1,949 performance mixer. I’ll have to evaluate it hands-on once mine arrives, and if it doesn’t work for me, I’ll just send it back and move on to the next option. It’s great that it doesn’t bother you that much, and I really hope I can say the same when I get it.
sh*t
makes you wonder how or why they chose not to address it
Either way - nothing on the market close to this …so it is what it is ![]()
Damn, definitely worse than I thought it would be. Shouldn’t be too bad with the detent on the knob, but still would rather have the button not pop.
I don’t like the filter popping on such an expensive piece of gear either but it also has a nice detente you can use to keep it effectively disabled while never using the on/off switch. That’s good enough for me.
agree as well if it was a cheap piece gear that would be different- hopefully they figure out a solution. No pops on my mixers at least.
No pop is better but during a performance you can definitely work with the pop in mind and either hide it or leave it on. I do like to disengage a filter after a high pass sweep to drop the bass in sharply but you can just move the knob quickly. Maybe in the next batch there will be a small change.
I wonder, does it still pop even with no sound, and does the resonance affect the pop?
Maybe @boredbrain can give us some info on this?
Is that pop really going to be the only topic from now on? Seems like a small issue to me, but ok, your choice to focus on this I guess… it doesn’t change my view on the quality of the device honestly
I was hoping to hear more about different use cases like how Ryan started his posts. Once I receive mine I’ll be sharing my routing ideas here as well. Planning on setting this up with DT+Outbox , a few other synths and OT with the mix buses!! Excited to hear other ideas
I think i’m going for the cheaper jellymix
Hi everyone. Adam here! First, I am not trying to defend against opinions here because we genuinely appreciate them, but I feel the need to clear up some misinformation.
There should not be a “pop” when turning on the filter, and we took this very seriously in the final design. When engaging the ON button, the phase of the signal does shift of course (it’s an analog SVF filter), albeit with an intentional slew, so there can sometimes be a noticeable difference, but the circuit does not make a hard switch or cut. The shift can be more pronounced with low frequency content or sustained sounds.
In Surco’s latest video, he is still using a prototype version of Xcelon SL, which still hadn’t received all of the latest tweaks, including several to further address this exact thing (and the awesome compressor tweaks!), in which he had a lot of input. He’s still in Mexico and so his final mixer is waiting for him ahead of his Japan tour.
Please let me know if you have any questions, although you may have to tag me to get my attention! ![]()
that said I do like what I have seen thus far on the new mixer ![]()
glad to hear the pops and issues resolved
It’s an analog mixer, it’s not something they can address with a FW update or anything like that.
So unless they make further modifications to the design, it is what it is.
Really that button is unusable IMO for live use. I’ll just leave the filter on all the time and rely on the detent. Otherwise I love the mixer, sounds fantastic and all the routing options are great.
Edit: I went back and made a second video using my Zoom recorder to pick up the record out of the mixer with audio playing through it:
First video left below:
I made a quick video about it. This is just through my cell phone audio, so apologies for the lack of audio quality:
@boredbrain - Adam, as you can hear from my video, my pop is pretty darn obvious (I did go pretty aggressive there at the start of the video, LOL).
Is this not expected then?
Made a quick demo of the Xcelon.
Well, I think this is a 100% valid concern for all of us who have already ordered the mixer, isn’t it? Of course, if you’re still planning to order, it helps to hear from those who already have access to it and then make your own decision. But I do think it’s fair to raise our concerns, and it’s really cool to have @boredbrain addressing the issue here. If this was something on Surco’s prototype that was fixed later, that’s great to hear, but it also seems that @Ryan0751 is having the same issue? It might or might not be a problem for some users here, but for those of us who do find it a problem, I think it’s fair to have this conversation.
Wait, so the pop it’s not only on the filter, but from 3 different sources?
Yeah, but that isn’t uncommon for analog mixers. Not all controls on my Xone 96 (or the Model 1 I had before as well) are silent, either.
The others aren’t as pronounced as the filter on/off button on my mixer, I just figured I’d mention them.
