Blackbox or Digitakt? Where to go "next"?

…blackbox wants to do a lot of things at once…

in long time experience i learned, gear that does one thing only, is doing the job/mission most consistently and satisfiing…big and pretty much only exception as far as i know and experienced also…the octatrack…

but i’m not experienced with the blackbox…looks nice…but from other situations i can tell, this is a sexy design in footprint and shape but for touchpadscreen handling it might be a bit too tiny…
so i guess it can do great as a copilot…but won’t do the trick as some kind of mainframe…

takt is THE quick and dirty catchphrase on the fly sampler…piick ur cherries and off u go…
no need to miss an arranger…chaining will do…
u’ll love the klak klak workflow…promise…way better then tiny touch touch…
and it sounds like big balls and big bells…but always prestine…

but if ur really looking for hardware mainframes…think about a mpc…a mpc1000 with jjos is way under 500 bux these days and does ALL what ur looking for here…and more…

apart from all that…the blackbox is not really prooven yet…will this screen survive the next year…nobody knows yet…and the company also is pretty fresh in the game…
while the takt is solid bullet prooved by now, coming from a company that has more than two decades of know how…

And does it right with no hassle, I can assure you.

…well then…answer seems…get them both!..never look back…

for sure they team up perfectly…it is half a little ipad meets half a little ot for sure…something like that will always do fine with takt…

As soon as you have resampling functionnality you can do everything

I have both DT and BB, and they are a great combo - they complement each other really well.

I never got an OT because I prefer hardware to be simple and immediate. If I want to do more complex stuff, I have the computer for that. Then sample the result into DT for further mangling or BB for long one-shot stereo lushness.

Thanks for this reply. I didn’t consider the MPCs. Fine. New info will be entertained! I’ll take a look.

As someone who has used the BlackBox, I can tell you that your guesses and uninformed opinions are all wrong about the device, if that helps.

Here’s my latest reason why I love the Blackbox -

Agree with that. For us the poor mans that buying a gear is an effort and a sacrifice to eat pasta for months, it’s safer to choose the right and well made machine to use extensively.
I chose Elektron year ago because of reputation and I’m happy with the DT, never failed or disapointed me. It is what it is, but it’s right.

…well, as mentioned…i’m not experienced with the black box…
assumed it might do well…
said it will team up perfectly…

and mentioning, that it’s not prooven yet, that the touch screen might go blind next year is anything but guessing…it’s a fact…
which does not include any hope of failure…of course i’m all positive that the blackbox will proove as fine as it looks…

and what does “…who has used…” exactly mean…?

and beside allt that, it does not help to drop that way as a first appearance post…but feel welcome anyway…

oh…and circuit ghost…that’s a nice little sonic candee blackbox example u got there…

Your opinion on the blackbox can be treated as valid as my opinion… basically… except that I assume you have more experience in music production area. Therefore it does have more value than my baseline opinion. So, some criticality in a sea of praise, with less value of that praise (due to the lack of exposure too the device) is still valuable.

The specific point about the health of the company and age of the device are both specific and valid.

The lifespan of an LCD… probably an absolute non-issue.

Even in my inexperienced opinion, the Blackbox can’t get worse from a functionality perspective, and there has been enough personal testimony to it’s solid functionality in this thread alone to support it’s purchase and use.

I also lower my risk with the ability to easily resell any equipment if it suuuccckkkkksss; which it decidedly won’t.

…hey, it’s name is sexy…it’s look is sexy…size is sexy, too…
and it combines functionalities of the two most beloved machines i’ve ever used…the mpc and the ot…

beside the fact it’s not just a lcd, but a touch screen…and touch functionality is key here…
this funky little box will do fine…and ur obviously in love with it  anyways…
so go for it…resell prices won’t drop too fast…

Absolutely, touchscreens are very reliable. I even have 10 years old screens still working fine, from old palms to ipad v1. Someone is spreading FUD for no reason here.

I guess I’ll share a more backwards approach. It’s quite a sample chain but you could esentially just sample DT stuff back into BB for playback after sculpting what you sampled from the BB. Lot of options. Here is one of them

6 Sequences arranged on the BB. Sampled into DT as one shots.

Then using DT as FX/Mangler.

It’s the same thing over an over again but hopefully this can help solidify some ideas for you @brandeded

The closest you will hear of the original is at 1:55 but there will be a bit more distortion haha

rRoxymore using both here and sounding good

Yo @reeloy

I ended up buying a digitakt and a blackbox, used them for ~2 weeks… and then returned them and am awaiting sweetwater to restock the Akai MPC One. That’s ~$700USD cheaper, and does effectively just as much if not more in a more cohesive and tangible UI (like the ability to use it’s effect stack to process incoming audio [maybe i don’t need that MODEP box? nah, I’ll build it anyway), stereo sampling, etc)… I am literally, to the exact, the target audience for the MPC One.

Also, I realize that there’s a learning curve with everything… so I felt it would be better to be indoctrinated to the MPC way than some katamari-esque, “please kill me” ball of devices.

So… thanks.

…well…with the ONE model, akai finally combined the old sexyness of mpc’s with the touch touch apeal of NOW…

so…that’s no bad decision at all…and with no doubt a good conclusion…with a truu chance for a final solution of all ur needs in ONE box…
hope it makes u happy…

if u end up, it sounds not that good…hey, pick a used analog heat and drop ur mpc outs through it…and all’s fine for real…

But I thought you wanted to stay DAWless?

I kid. Good luck with the One. Great buy in your situation I think. Gives you all the features you may need and a tried and true workflow to make music.

…and if u end up with all’s fine but missing some breath in ur final mixes…
start resampling through some random stuff…solo out and right back in…

I know what you mean… but, like, i don’t know what i’m doing… and truly… it’s like this thing does what the digitakt does(-ish) and what the blackbox does… and it’s like $700USD less. So… like, that’s… like a lot of money.
