Bi-weekly record-diving sampling extravaganza | 19 | Total Contrast - Sunshine (Instrumental)

Welcome Elektronauts to another week of sampling pleasure!

This week we have a gem from 1985, and is from a second disc included with ‘Hit and Run’ - Sunshine (Instrumental) by Total Contrast, which is one half of ‘The Basement Tapes’.

Total Contrast were a male musical duo from England, specialising in soul and electro music. They are well known for their 1985 hit “Takes a Little Time”, which made No. 1 on the US dance chart and No. 17 in the UK. The group formed in 1983 consisting of members Robin Achampong and Delroy Murray. Further releases in the UK included “Hit and Run”, a minor hit which reached No. 41 in 1985, “The River” which peaked at No. 44 in early 1986, and “What You Gonna Do About It” peaking at No. 63 in the summer of 1986. The latter track was also featured on the band’s self-titled album.

Here’s a youtube taster but make sure to download the vinyl recording for your sampling pleasure - I’ve also included a stemroller export. I only have the instrumental version as that’s all that’s on the disc, but there is a version out there with vocals which you’re free to grab and use.

They saw us coming with this one

Man this one’s gonna be fun I can feel it! :fire: FRESH find @natehorn!

@proskynesis Seriously, man haha man that might be a new record time! :muscle: It sounds like a funky Halloween theme, and couldn’t help but draws parallels to MJ’s Thriller in some sections! Cool old school drums man!

Thanks! Exhausting day so put myself to bed and turned on the laptop just as this was posted. All ableton. Started from a vcv rack patch ive been messing with. Aimed for a NYC 1982 mutantdisco sound.

The sample track sounds like the base of one of my early favorites of Nas! @natehorn please keep blessing us with these UK jewels! :sunglasses:

Great sample to work with, there’s loads to be had in there.

Horn sound’s a bit harsh so I might re-eq that at some point

Thought I’d go with some upbeat house:

Great track, really nice to work with.

Have messed about with some stuff myself and I have to agree there’s a lot of good material here - should be sharing something in the morning!

I’m away from home this week, brought my Digitakt to keep me company! Used the sample in a few different ways to create this whacky number, including for some of the percussion, but most of the drums are handled by some MPC Samples from Mars stuff :v: The drums chop up nicely though so I might do another track using some of my other sketches…

Damn… this track is nice. Its a one shot farm.

I’m trying to figure out if I should chop on the 404 or Maschine. (As I typed, I knew it will be on the 404.)

And I’m not going into this with a plan… I listened to it to see what was going on, and now I am going to just chop things that sound nice, then switch gears and make music… I’m saying, I dont want to chop with a plan, because I think it limits the potential of the chopping results.

Decided to go more a housey break route. Agree with @BLKrbbt about the one shot farm sentiment. I had trouble staying focused and had to force myself to stop dicking around with slices. Need to run over it again for some final arrangement choices, and do some sound tweaks, but should be done tomorrow. Used Drum Computer for the drum sounds. Pretty powerful little VST that lets you craft your own drum sounds pretty quickly. The sequencer is cool, but prefer to sequence using Ableton. Added extra shimmer for the shimmer crew.

Yeooooo! Hope everyone’s good. Man, I’ve missed these. Haven’t done any music since the Eternal Caravan brief back in early May until today. Sweet, sweet sample @natehorn.

I’ve sort of made 3. They all go on too long and all riff on the same theme/sample chops. Loosely chopped and pitched/bpm’d in Serato Studio then dumped on to the SP404mk2. Drums from the SP-16 fed into the 404. Live takes, questionable effects and a bit rough but shiiiiiiiet it was fun.

Absolutely sick beats there my friend and super productive and inspiring.

Love all three, but the last is especially enveloping with funkiness.

Thanks mate, appreciate that! Nothing for 6 weeks, then 3 in a day  Feel like I’ve got some of myself back as cheesy as that might sound.

Also, lovely varied stuff all round by everyone. Appreciate this community :purple_heart:

I tried a couple things.

I found this hyperpop groove in this if you speed it up and pitch it down, but Im in a conundrum. The tempo drifts a bit and isnt a whole number.

Its good in long stretches, so when I chop it up to layer a beat and bass over the sample, if the chops are small, I cant get it to transition between parts smoothly.

If i leave it long, then the beat drifts out. I tried playing some elements on top, but I think its a wash. At least I tried.

I did add a vocal scream in the front. Anyways, here it is, hardly touched… but I wanted to post results… I just have to go work on something else and cannot fight this anymore…

I did EQ and compress it nicely I think though. I can always come back and recreate the groove in a drum machine.
