In the market for a set of headphones.
Have been reading multiple posts and have come down to Beyer Dynamics.
I am currently using a set of Bose QC15 along with Yamaha MSP-5.
I got used to these Bose although not a proper mixing set of headphones.
Now could someone explain the difference between the:
770 32/80/250 Ohms
880 250 Ohms
990 250 Ohms
A bit at a loss here…
Would use it along my desk (Midas Venice 160) as well as from my MOTU ULTRALITE Mk3.
Thanks for any advice,
V
I’ve used 990 and now 770. The main difference between all three is the back. 770 are closed, 880 semi open and 990 open. All three work well at 250ohms imo. Perfect for Elektrons and other synths / drum machines.
Edit: there are a fair few comparisons online. For example: https://www.headphonepalace.com/beyerdynamic-dt-770-pro-vs-880-pro-vs-990-pro/
Having used all three I have to say I prefer the 770 (annoyingly I currently only have 880)
I asked my Sweetwater dude about the ohm situation when I bought the 770 pros last year and he recommended the 80 ohm version for use with my Babyface Pro. They seem perfect for that interface and when used with Elektrons. I now use them with an SSL Six and can’t turn the headphone knob up past 9 o’clock typically, which I think indicates the 250 ohm version would be fine. I can use my 80 ohm 770s with my phone if I want though, so I think I was recommended that model based on versatility as well.
Side note, I love the 770s but am getting more concerned about my hearing so am thinking of some open headphones next. Not sure if 990 is the one or if there are better alternatives for open backs. The 770s sound great though… the bass might be extended but it’s nice to have as a contrast to my bass-less Yamaha monitors.

Looks like 880 for me then
Bass response not as good in the 880
But yeah very balanced sound
I highly, highly, highly recommend that you get Sonarworks Reference 4. Turned my 770s into the perfect mixing tool. You can even buy specifically calibrated DTs from them, though I just use the software
I have a DT770 80 ohm, Sennheiser HD650 and Sony MDR7506
It depends what you want to achieve
I use DT770 for tracking, Sennheiser HD650 for mixing /mastering, Sony for general listening and sometimes sound design
I have the 880 pros, I love them for mixing, very detailed and revealing imo. They are also very comfortable (for my head, anyway!).
Thank you all for the inputs.
As I do not have a way to try any of these, this is very helpful.
Torn between 770 and 880
My Bose QC15 were VERY comfortable and I got used to mixing with them.
one of the differences is that 770s are built like tank and survive lots of bad working conditions or abuse.
others are not so durable.
The earcups on these are so plush and comfortable, you’ll love them. And you can get replacements easy enough, too. It should be noted that the 250 ohm comes with a wound cable - which is nice if you don’t like your cables getting all tangled all the time - I have these.
The 250 are quieter than the others, but assuming you have the gear to drive them (ie interface etc) u are all good…
The 32 has leather pads and is louder, whereas the 250 is the plush stuff.
ATP podcast did a bit of a spin on these a couple of podcasts ago actually.
Not sure where you are in the world, but here in the UK you can send them back if your not happy. I don’t like doing this to small companies, but to Amazon etc I have no worries.
I started with 770, sent them back and got the 880 (loved these and would highly recommend them if you don’t need fully closed back). Then it all went crazy and I ended up getting into headphone amps and DACS and more expensive cans.
The 770 were very good, but preferred the 880. I’m not a big fan of closed back unless I need them for recording something like acoustic guitar where you don’t want the audio bleeding out of the cans.
You’ll also end up with two options - editions - home or Pro. One came with a curly cable so that was out for me, the home or “edition” ones also had less clamping pressure - I preferred that for longer use but the pro clamping pressures better if your moving around.
250ohm are the only ones I’d use as everything I have drives them.
I got hooked and ended up with a set of T1.2 and a set of 1770. It’s cost me a fortune but I don’t regret it, even when they’re sat unused for a long time - I know I’ll come back to them and enjoy it.
Beyers also have they’re own sound and you may prefer another brand over them. As @craig mentions, sonarworks is pretty good for use on the computer
Put it this way: I got used to mixing with these Bose QC15. I could foresee easier to adapt to the sound rather than having to deal with uncomfortable cans.
My Bose are getting tired…
I like noise cancellation and I am used to closed back over the ear…
Been on the 880s for 3-4 years now and while great, they definitely are secondary to a set of monitors. They do fill an essential role as I can get a coarse balance on monitors and a finer balance on the cans like reverb check etc. I wouldn’t want to rely on them for accurate bass mixing bass though. I’ve heard the 990s are good for mastering and I will say that for just listening overall, open backs sound really nice in general. The Beyerdynamics are all comfortable as well. I’ve spent 8-hour workdays with them on almost all day with no hotspots or discomfort other than getting headphone hair.
I have the 990 250 ohms. I run them out of my focusrite audio interface, with the volume usually set right at 50% for mixing or focused listening, so no issues with an interface struggling to push the 250 version.
I find that they’re incredibly revealing, especially on mid-highs/highs. Bass is present and clear but definitely not as strong as you’d get with more DJ style headphones, and I think the 880s/770s have more bass. Usually if I can get something to sound good on the 990s, it will sound great on monitors.
I also think the big cups are pretty comfy, even with big ears and glasses.
With regards to the open back on the 990s, I often mix with a 3 year old sleeping in my room, and he never notices or wakes up to the sound. They certainly didn’t leak as much as I was expecting.
hi craig- just curious, am using the trial version of reference 4, and with the correct profile for my headphones everything sounds not just flat (as i expected it should be) but also very thin and light on the bottom end, as well as extremely one dimensional like its been mono-ed… is this to be expected? and is the objective to bring things up until they sound “normal” through the sonarworks plugin, or is this extreme difference only to illustrate and make obvious the most standout errors in the mix? i cant help but suspect im missing something here…! hope that all makes sense, any opinions welcome
To be honest, I moved on from 770s and Sonarworks. Now I’m not using any correction software but learning my new(er) cans inside out instead.
ah cool, cheers for the reply anyway
Hi! I’m using a Sennheiser HD25 rn which isn’t the best for producing musique. After long period of searching and given my budget I decided to get a 250 Ohm Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro (yes, I have amp, interface etc.) for general use in my studio, recording, mixing, mastering, but mostly for my Digi boxes. Anyone using this?
Also the 770 popped up during my search:
“The biggest difference is that DT 990 has an open back and DT 770 has a closed back. This means that DT 990 is better for mixing and mastering, while DT 770 is better for recording.”
How do you feel about this?
Thx,
Zsolt
