Beyerdynamic DT 770/880/990

If you don’t need the closed backs, then I’d always suggest open backs as it’s a more natural sound. But obviously the sound will be audible to anyone else in the room.

990 are just a little bit more detailed, but 770 are built like tank and last forever.

I have the 250 990 pro, i really like em. Havnt really spent much time with closed backs

had a bunch over the years but just got a set of 700 Pro X and they are very very good. Closed back but I can record, mix and master comfortably with them already. They’re very accurate, detailed in mids and highs and have a really nice bass response. Nothing overblown… Totally love 'em!

I‘m using the DT700 and DT900 ProX and they are really brilliant for all of my synth stuff. 900s has a wider stage and 700 a bit more bass. But both are much more precise than my old DT770 which was also great for a long time.

I’m using the 880 pro and am quite happy with it. It took a bit to get used to the sound but that’s always the case with new headphones or speakers. I don’t use them a lot any more though because i’m using my speakers most of the time.

The 880 pro should be more neutral and the 990 pro more bassy. But that’s only what Beyerdynamic says and it’s highly subjective which one you might prefer.

My word of warning for both are the pads. :disappointed:

Wonderful and soft, but a b*tch to replace. I’ve broken replacements trying to stretch them over the body ring. If you want to clean them properly (soaking and washing), they will loose shape and then need replacement. Loosing shape changes their frequency response. That issue seriously turns me off of these. Additionally I have driver clicking problems on these. All in all, they are okay, but there are far better options.

I own headphones with adhesive attached pads (on metal), and honestly I far prefer that. The leather lasts way longer. Can be cleaned without collapsing the pad too.

I’ve since put on old Audeze LCD-X pads from a super old 2014 pair. It sounds pretty meh (but comfy as hell), but they are just rough studio headphone for me at this point.

I’ve used a pair of Dekoni Audio Elite pads for the last 2 years after getting fed up with constantly replacing the Beyerdynamic pads after only a month or two of use – https://dekoniaudio.com/product/elite-velour-ear-pads-for-beyerdynamic-headphones/
They are really comfortable; soundwise I haven’t noticed any difference (on DT 990 Pro 250 Ohm at least), and they last an awfully long time. Haven’t tried washing them yet, but giving them a wipedown with some distilled water or IPA seems to work fine for cleaning.

For mixing I would say always open  990pro

I have a pair of 880 250ohms i use for mixing. The mids are very detailed and the scene space is great but there is a huge lack of bass definition and response that make them unreliable for mixing the whole spectrum.
I’m looking for another pair that would be more accurate on the whole spectrum. The openbacks are really comfy as long as you don’t need to record anything acoustic and that you are not surrounded by noises.

for some reason I ended up with 880 600ohm edition  I think I did something wrong but going strong for I would say 10 years now? and most of the things can feed them I guess. Or am I completely wrong?

I actually wonder uf u don’t have a 600 ohms version actually. I don’t know how to check that.

See in the first days what about the bass and the rest in general with a mix you know well and in case u can always send them back.

it is written on the jack

Nothing’s written on mine…

probably 250 then

I have 880 Pros, I think they work really well – detailed, relatively flat and even better with Sonarworks. They do neeed new pads, though, and at some point I might upgrade to something else.

George the cat prefers 990’s over the 880’s.
He says their cables are full-flavored & taste delicious!
