Roland gear is rather on sterile side, so FX boxes can help with that.
my favorites are still Zoom MS-70CDR (hacked) and Korg NTS-1 (stuffed with 3rd party plugins – Sinevbes and others).
and EHX Platform.
I will also throw the mpc live into the mix as well. I’ve performed a few hour or more sets with just the mpc live mk2. There’s a bit of prep to get it together mind.
Actually, after a few weeks of playing with it, the Syntakt is a good choice for this. I’d happily play a full set on that.
Hmm, depends, for a techno set a Perkons and OT (as the fx) seems a match made in heaven from what I’ve seen. Perkons can do all the live stuff, OT handle the fx and transitions.
Deluge could be great for a more diverse set, it allows easy improv and easy uninterrupted loading of projects. A mix of prepared stuff and on the fly stuff.
Octatrack on its own could also be great, but probably more for staying within a single project due to loading times. Possibly better to have mostly prepared stuff, and use scenes, mutes etc for performance.
I’ve got a lot of devices capable of this… inc all the current Elektrons apart from the OT, Mc707, MPC Live 2… but, if I had to pick something right now to perform a 1hr live set from scratch I would go for the Akai Force… that has everything in one place and the best performance features.
The only thing I would worry about is it’s tempo being fixed per project… so it’d have to either stay at set tempo or work out tempo changes manually as part of transitions.
EDIT: at which point I would start using the Force and then think ‘why aren’t I just using my MBP, Ableton and the Push 2?’… and this, folks, is my cyclic experience of the Akai Force. I’m gonna sell it.
i prefer using 707/101 with Launchpad for clip/scene triggering.
as for me, it makes huge difference.
of course, it can be done via 707/101’s pads, but i prefer keeping them free (of this duty) for some more interesting things (scatter, arp, etc)
I’ll import tracks in and play through them with sequences set up for transitions and breakdowns.
I’ll also have an extra bank of samples to ‘ad lib’ with, as well as white noise risers and samples.
I tend to have an idea of what order I want to play things in, and will set up the set like that, but the sequences paradigm also allows me to mix up the order if I wish.
depends.
if you have USB–>MIDI host, or don’t mind investing in one – any Launchpad goes.
if you want Launchpad to have MIDI sockets – then yes, it has to be Pro.
i’m using LP Mini via RetroKits RK-006 which supports USB hubs.
