Bad Gear

I thought that dnb/breakcore thing he did at the end was dope. I really liked the way the sounds felt like they were disintegrating. I personally enjoy using “lo-fi” processing for that kind of stuff… I want stuff to sound like it’s tearing and being squeezed out of the audible spectrum. I might have weird taste though :))

I like those sonic qualities you named, but it didn’t really do it for me in the context of this episode. Of the jams that was definitely the best.

Yeah, and he mentioned he used a DAW for that one. I’m not an SP-303 (or 404) user at all, but I think the interface of the system is part of what gives tracks the sound isy known for. With that track, it was really just used for processing — but I think that’s what I’d be likely to do if I had one; I don’t know if I would have patience to make music like that

I was kind of expecting him to do a Madlib live jam. It would have been cool to hear a Florian mixing up Blue Note samples. I’d probably be smoking cigarettes clapping while watching the episode.

oh no… I’m scared to click…

he said “em kay 2”, this channel is dead to me.

ok he said “mark 2” later on, we’re back being friends!

he said “em kay 2” again… :frowning:

Made me remember why I sold mine.

Hmm, I was just wondering what unused devices to sell next.

Ooh, I gotta listen. I’ve got an original and the main thing I’d replace for is probably a mkii.

Syntakt would be tempting since I do have a Digitakt 2, but I don’t need more than a Rytm.

Putting together a video like this in less than a week has got to be a challenge in general, but even more so for the ARmk2, I imagine (I have never touched one, I did poke at a mk1 briefly), though owning other Elektron gear probably helps immensely.

High point for me was the meme of Sarah Belle Reid calling him…

spoiler, is there a better way to do this?

He got in a couple of good digs, I’ve heard alechko do better rytm jams though. The one about middle-aged balding techno nerds was pretty painful. A lot of good memes in this episode.

I think overall his biggest complaint was things taking a long time to make them sound good, and his complaint about the pads is so common that it doesn’t even register as a complaint anymore.

Overall, pretty entertaining and also makes me believe we’re one episode closer to seeing the OT on bad gear. Especially since he said something like “this is the first of the high end elektrons we’re seeing on the show”, just like a freudian “tell” that there are more to come.

thanks

he definitely has a point about time and effort needed to make it sound good, the default machines settings don’t sound good and not balanced, definitely need time to tweak, the depth is insane so finding good sound will come but it’s not as immediate as other drum machines.

imo the video did no go deep enough as to where the machine can go, mostly going through default sounds and some of the factory patterns, but the individual outs jam sounded pretty good, which makes sense, with decent outboard gear a lot can be done to make it sound better in terms of separation/individual track space in the mix.

I was really expecting him to do a whole jam on the SY CHIP machine only, things I’ve heard coming from @ThomasJ are making the rytm a whole new instrument, I was certain he’d at least do a variation of his theme just with the SID sounds…

overall, I don’t think he went deep enough, it was a pretty shallow showcase, don’t blame him or anything, he’s a roland fan (I mean used to immediacy) and has limited time to push out these videos so whatever he made out of it was decent but not really a good showcase…

Agree it’s not an in depth showcase of the machine’s capabilities, but I love how he seems to consistently hit on the flaws of the instruments on the channel.

If there’s something that sounds fun, I gotta go to Mylar Melodies or RMR for the jams, Loopop for the workflow tutorial, and then Bad Gear to tell me everything that’s wrong with it.

Edit: and to catch strays about bald mid-30s techno dudes.

I find the bald techno dudes very funny because it’s a nice self burn

Ok, I’ll add that one to my endless list of cover ideas

I can’t believe he hasn’t done it already TBH, given it is probably by far one of the most polarising bits of gear ever, and undoubtedly for some the most hated.
