I like this thing. I think it really shines with another synth or two, as demonstrated. I want to hear more sounds of drums or other percussive sounds going through it! I haven’t heard much stuff like that in demos on the internet.
And some Memphis rap…
even in hobby-trimming mode, still cuts deep.
Good heavens, Bad Gear has to be the be the best channel on synthtube, #mytwocents
Years ago, a friend introduced me to the concept of having a “sick movie” – she had a specific movie to watch when she was sick and feeling awful and it lifted her up a bit, without being something that required much attention, since she’d already seen it. Her sick movie was Jurassic Park, which I thought was a solid choice.
I rarely get sick, but I’ve been in search of my sick movie ever since. No movie has managed to distract me from feeling like shit the way Jurassic Park did for my friend… I probably just don’t have the right taste in films.
I’ve been sick this weekend and had an epiphany, as I laid sleepless, trying to remember that “zero years, German tech/IDM, balls to the wall dancefloor sweeper” jam from the Minibrute episode 4 years ago: my equivalent of a sick movie is to watch reruns of Bad Gear! I’ve been watching old episodes for hours, laughing my ass off, totally forgetting about my pounding headache. I highly recommend this.
If I’m feeling down I often listen to 5 episodes of bad gear back to back
Such a great trick to base a channel off cynicism but leave an end result that feels positive and uplifting…if that makes any sense
I’m probably going to regret saying this but when I hear it outside of a hip hop context I’m severely unimpressed.
But I’m super happy with my SP-202 and I don’t think there’s any more musical merit to that than the 303.
The 303 has better effects except pitch which the 202 is superior (to me) and some additional features, but the timbre of the lofi sampling (and I listened to both extensively before purchasing the 202) I feel like the metallic characteristic of the 303 is less appealing than the equally metallic characteristic of the 202.
I mostly use mine to bounce complete tracks to for texture before recording back to digital, however I’ve sequenced mine externally on several occasions but it’s just as clunky as the 303 in that use case. I also use it to sample instruments before putting them on the digitakt or MPC and this is the same way I’d probably use the 303.
The resampling feature would definitely be nice to have on the 202.
I thought the video was good but I’d have liked to see him dig into it a little harder, I kinda felt that he was going easy on it because he knew it would be shots fired if he said anything too sacrilegious against this one, but maybe I’m just projecting.
Now people can tell me I’m wrong and that’s cool but this is my honest assessment after already doing the research in the past and then watching this episode.
I won’t tell panda bear he was wrong though. All that sp303 shit he did with two 303’s and a 4 track still sounds great.
“Let’s be honest, most SP-303s have become part of an early 2000’s hip-hop cosplay kit.”
This seems like at least one shot was fired.
Yeah but that’s about people and I meant how he addressed the device, he was pretty kind in his assessment. I’ve heard him say some shit about synths that if that were your homie he was talking about, you’d make the ooo face and cringe.
Very true. Did you see his interview with Weaver?
No is that linked here? I might have scrolled past it or something.
That’s long! I’ll watch it later tonight and we can compare notes lol
Gave me a bit more perspective of why he does what he does.
the MF Doom style intro is the best one yet imo
