I had an email from Baby Audio about a new product release on 2nd September.
I haven’t needed or used most of their plugins but I’m always interested in synthesis-based software drum machines. There actually aren’t that many around as far as I can tell, so I’m certainly curious. I’m hoping it’s more than just another 808/909 emulation, we really don’t need any more of that!
Also, fingers crossed for a built-in step sequencer as they always make things fun and immediate!
EDIT - I just realised I missed an important detail there - the email subject was “Liberate your beats from sample dependence”
There are a decent collection of drum synth plugins that I use and can heartily recommend:
D16 Group - Punchbox (kicks - sample based, 606, 808, 909 and sinewave synthesis)
SugarBytes - Drum Computer (all drum types)
Beatsurfing - 7 Deadly Snares (snares…)
Beatsurfing - Random Metal (all drum types)
You might know all these, but I can definitely recommend them. Curious to see what BA release, for some reason I tend to avoid them as a company because of their saturation of marketing - they feel like the Surfshark of VST makers for gow many adverts I see for them and it puts me right off.
I did demo Sugarbytes Drum Computer but I thought it was very fiddly and I quickly realised that all the best presets that I liked were the ones that were sample-based. I didn’t like the actual synth part of it very much at all. Very thin and weedy to my ears, but I appreciate that’s subjective and based on what type of stuff you’re trying to make.
As a broad concept, I like self-contained drum machines as opposed to individual plugins that do kicks or snares or whatever. Just a personal choice, but I want to get away from DAW sequencing and just whip up ideas quickly and bounce to audio.
Anyway we’ll find out soon enough - at least it’s only teasing for a couple of days and not months and months!
Just demo’d and quickly bought this. There’s an extra 10% off with code Fall10 so that bought it down to £55 for me.
I think it’s a well thought out plug-in and will provide me with enough sounds to justify the purchase even if those sounds aren’t the main kick or snare/clap.
I bought it last night and just had the chance to install and play this lunchtime. It sounds promising, and I like the export feature, which will be handy for creating samples for the Digitakt.
I love it already, although it seems it would be even better suited to the iPad with its touch screen.
I’m going to experiment more using it with the Push 3 and mpe, but I think I might buy it. Also good as a sample generator. Uses very little cpu too. Less than some of the built-in mpe racks.
I picked iOS version too, it’s sounds incredibly good to my ears, but yeah the buttons are so tiny and UI is just about ok, not great even with Apple Pencil some of the byttondvstill take a few attempts to press.
