I thought it would be nice to give the Apple Vision Pro its own thread.
For the record I do not own or ever used the Vision Pro. It’s just that the more reviews I’ve been swallowing the more I’m getting convinced this is totally going to take over the future.
Forget about phones, computers, tablets, displays and the giant TV’s in our living rooms. Just by putting on some glasses it will give you all that and more. (more or less)
And to be clear I’m not saying this first gen version of Vision Pro is already doing that but I do think the Vision Pro is a good glimpse into what’s coming for us. There’s still a lot of tech that needs to be improved on but I do think Apple nailed the start of it and that for better or worse we’re all gonna be hooked within a decade.
If you got the Apple Vision Pro already please share your experience with us and why you think this is going to take over everything or why it’s not. It will be interesting reading through this thread in 10 years time (cause Elektronauts will never die right?! ) and see how we thought about it at since the beginning.
It will be interesting what the future will be like. I think it has its pro’s and con’s.
On one side we could turn the entire world into time square.
But at the same time this would all be virtual meaning we could do without it in the physical world.
The more you start to think about these things and what effect that will bring is mind blowing.
How much different such a world would look like could be a very interesting development.
It’s interesting seeing the reactions from people who’ve used VR headsets before, compared to those who haven’t. The latter group are (rightly) much more wowed. This first version of the Vision Pro is running into some familiar problems, treats some things in a different way from the likes of Meta, and is a very interesting device indeed. I’m probably not going to buy one until it’s on at least its third incarnation, but I hope that Apple keeps investing in the concept.
At the moment, I would use it primarily as a media player and a giganto-screen for my MacBook Pro. Those 2 bits seem to be where it’s been most fondly received. Some VR principles in it seem to only be leading to a dead end, and I would love it to have controller support for games. The ultimate vision (no pun intended) from Apple strikes me as being AR glasses that project stuff into your world, rather than being a conventional camera-based system. But we’ll see where it goes - I’m glad that the launch seems to have been a success even at that price, although sales are obviously modest from a pure units point of view.
i think we will find a similar result we found with smart phones. yes, it is possible to do “everything” from one device now. but in reality, what will people actually do with it? definitely not everything. consume more media and “get more work done” (same amount of work, if not less completed EOD) more likely
also fairly confident that the media experiences that will be available for VR/AR will follow the current trend where they lack artistic vision or creative effort, so they will essentially just be virtual fireworks shows to ooo and aaaah at slackjawed.
According to every review so far it seems motion sickness is not really a thing on the Vision Pro.
Also these screen recordings and what you experience in real life suppose to be very different.
I think it records at 1080p and limits some other stuff.
I’m sure it’s different, I wonder how long it will take for the first reports of vision impairment to come in. When people’s prescription for glasses and contacts get worse, or temporary blindness, forced near sidedness etc.
Uncharted territory rarely comes without some kind of unseen hitch.
My only recent VR experience is my son’s Meta Quest 3. After 10 minutes or so of near puking and feeling like I was walking into shit despite standing still in the middle of the kitchen it started to click and then after another 10 minutes it started to be a hell of a lot of fun.
I’m not sure where all this is headed but there is a future in it all for sure. I’ve watched a few Vision reviews and Gen 1 is a long way away from getting me on board but I was like that with the iPhone. Was the 3S before I figured that smartphones could deliver something I could use (mostly shitty 99p games to play on the train…).
Can you imagine a future version of Guitar Hero 10 years from now with these things though? Like, it would feel like you’re on stage at Glastonbury murdering some Killers song or whatever but what fun. I do appreciate how that is, in a way, a pretty sad thought…
Vision Mk3 I might get on board - I think it would be incredible for watching movies (for example).
