Alien Romulus chat : SPOILERS

finally watched it.
the scifi part is great, production top notch, sound design great.

the predictable holywood dialogue ruins it quite a lot, it just keeps coming back one cliche sentence after another.
30-40% less talking and it would be much much better.

any way, happy it’s not avengers levels of bad cgi/cliche, overall enjoyed it, honestly expected it to bey way worse.

really loved the android part, wwwway more then prometheus/covenant.

btw anyone noticed the monophonic synth stabs here and there? was real fun to hear such simple and effective sound design

Saw this in the ciné and had a very good time. Probably helps that the Alien franchise had already hit rock-bottom, a bloated boring overinsistent mess.

This film imo fell into a similar category as stuff like Dredd (or the Raid Redemption), The Fugitive or… other films I can’t remember right now - it knows it’s M.O. it’s on rails and unashamed about it, not trying to be special or clever or ponderous, but to stay tight and travel from point A to B in a relatively straight line.

Sucks if you want a thinker or an expansion on a world (or IP), and it’s loaded with sugar rush throwback for the fans, but I think it’s unapologetic for that.

Imo Aliens succeeds because it didn’t try to emulate Alien, but instead took the world in its own direction, unapologetically Cameronesque action that’s so out of sync with the aesthetic of Alien that it becomes its own thing, and judged as such. It succeeds on its own terms.

In the same way, Romulus does its own thing. Perhaps less originally, and with more reference, but it’s kinda ok with being an on-rails action shooter - more video game than Ridleyesque cinematic masterpiece. It makes its own terms and succeeds.

I’m not saying Romulus is on the level of the first two films, but I also think it’s doing a disservice to rate it on their terms. If it took place within its own IP it’d be a solidly enjoyable action film, and we’d not be quabbling about whether it does proper service (or makes too many callbacks) to the Alien IP. (Ofc, saying that, part of my enjoyment was the sigh of relief that it wasn’t as dire as the preceding films.)

Can’t wait to see it at home tho - the cinema screen was washed out and some of the darker shots fell apart.

Yep. I liked the more theatre-focused cast of Alien (Yaphet Kotto, John Hurt, Ian Holm - what a team) so would have enjoyed something like that again. The cast of Romulus were likely to have been chosen to appeal to a younger demographic. It didn’t quite feel like a teen drama set in space but at times it wasn’t far off.

I’m still holding out for a full, unabridged version of the Earth War saga.

Obviously a lot of very capable people worked on this movie and it looks and sounds great. It’s a shame then that it has to be this fan service bullshit that permeates so much of blockbuster cinema right now. It kills immersion when you have so many references and recreated scenes. I would say it is the worst alien movie so far.

As an alien series fan, the movie was just ok. 6/10. Not much action scenes or good gore (horror). It played way too safe and became boring and predictable. Sets and the music was top notch though.

Trailers and reviews were completely wrong stating it was the most intense horror. ( commercials in my country).

After several months ive completely forgotten this film. But the original has never been forgotten. I really wish he stopped years ago.

eh, can’t say I enjoyed Covenant more the Romulus… I do agree that this one was a bit too safe and I like the term “fan service”.

I suppose every director scared to fail in box office, playing safe is the name of the game for almost every scifi film for a long time now, but c’mon studios, you can let them get wild, 20th century just made gazillion dollars on the new deadpool, you can afford attract less teenagers and make a grown up movie. in fact, this might be better for the teenagers, maybe these movies will be for them same thing the original alien or blade runner or 2001 was for us at the time…

With the cults and Newt? For it.

Aliens 10/10
Alien 3 6/10
Alien Resurrection 5/10
Prometheus 8/10
Covenant 7/10
Romulus 9/10

I think as mentioned its reintroducing Aliens to a younger audience. However, saying that I think it made perfect sense having a younger group for this situation. We seen plenty enough of older characters in Aliens, and their objective is sound in their current situation and age.

For me easily the best Alien, 1 and 2 are leagues ahead but I loved Aliens. However, people, they really need to adapt Dark Horse comic Labyrinth. For those who know, will know but some of the best Aliens stories are from that era.

For me I disliked the fanservice, its like hey old people we got you too. Plus that Bitch line made no sense in the context too, and so many shots that were homages to the OG movies. I enjoyed it when it was doing something new.

Yep, the cultists, the dreams, General Spears’ alien army (which didn’t work out too well for him), the redemption of Hicks, the character arc of Newt escaping from the asylum and of course, Ripley’s final destruction of the alien queen mother. Would make for an intense trilogy.

Problem is you can’t make that movie anyway with Hicks being dead, Ripley older. I want other stories that are not based on Ripley who I adore. But again bring us Labrynith, that is real horror which i feel Aliens is missing nowadays. I don’t give a shit about the stupid black goo. Giving back stories to Aliens suck

Agree and a lot of “horror” these days is simply not frightening at all due to these constant self-referential nods.

Ah Labyrinth, the story that sends chills down my spine. I don’t think they could film that without some changes. :stuck_out_tongue:

Hicks being dead is canon as per Alien 3 but I wouldn’t say no to a retcon. Hicks got done dirty, as did Newt. ;(

Let’s not forget alien versus predator 1 and 2 :joy:

Felt it was so shitty how they were written off in Alien 3, its one of the reasons why I dislike that movie. The premise of the prison colony is fine, but I hate pretty much everything else about it. At least Resurrection was fun, and felt like a Dark Horse Alien story diluted.

AvP 1 was dumb fun, though again why not adapt the comic and then we can have the best female badass since Ripley

I actually really quite like Alien 3, it’s a strange film full of amazing character actors and there are some timeless moments such as the Bishop restoration and the leadworks… It was directorial hell but watching the special edition now is a treat! It wasn’t what fans wanted and I still mourn Hicks and Newt but out of context I rather enjoy the film.

Machiko is a grade-A badass for sure! Would love to see her in a film or two.

In the first film One Alien dominated the Nostromo. In this a few hundred looked like flies being swatted. Less is More. In a Music forum we know this.
