Adding labels to OT mk1

Has anyone actually put labels on their OT mk1 for better reminders of functions? If so, I’d be grateful for a photo or description of what you did and whether it helped.

I’m a long time OT mk1 user. But I find when I’m away from it, I have to look stuff up. I had a few minutes with an OT mk2 recently and somehow it felt a little easier to use. But that also seems like a steep price to pay just for better labelling.

I believe @AdamJay did some encoder labels, very handy when using the audio editor.

Confirm. I have one and it’s really useful. You can get it from Oversynth:

LOL – I am definitely not forbidding those! (though I abuse time stretch, I don’t beat match)

I’m used to use tape for mixers. I think I’d prefer a printed reminder than labels, as I don’t have any repetitive workflow (yet).

That how it becomes interesting!

Yeah, I was thinking about gaffer tape. Will the OT’s paint job withstand some tape?

I did it. traded someone on here my mk1 for their mk2 and a couple hundred bucks. glad I did, as it’s much easier to use. especially if you’re away from it for a while and then come back to it. less “how the hell do I do that again…?” moments.

I’ve definitely seen people adding labels to their OT’s though:

Try finding some of this tape that’s marketed specifically to not leave glue residue. Mine was also mentioning (audio) mixers as use example.

I often buy and sell my gear second hand, and after too many cleanup times I’ve stopped using painters tape or other tape that was around and didn’t come off. It’s great stuff.

Where I bought it it seems kinda brandless and/or Dutch description, so I hope you’ll find it via this explanation.

Get yourself a dymo gun, pure retro labeling…

I use acid free artist’s tape when labeling mixer or patch bay inputs. I also will use it for labeling synth panels with little “flags” of settings or last used patch number, etc… also good for the end of cables to label where they’re supposed to go. so I’d probably go that route. never leaves residue. I think if left on for years, and changing environmental conditions, it possibly could. but I’ve never had an issue.

I have had the thought. But it seems like it would be more than a couple hundred dollars’ difference at this point.

…i’d also hardly recommend…tape!

get some black stage tape…tailor it to perfect size by just ripping it the way u want ur additional labeling…buy a white permanent marker and mark/write/draw the symbols, words or whatever helps ur lack of muscle memory right there where u need/want it…

looks real and cool in the end…makes it more URS…
sticks for ages but also can be undone within seconds without any leftover marks…

only fast workflow attention booster i needed on the mk1, was a little cross sticker on the toptip of the level push encoder…to separate it more obvious from the six others right next to it…since i always grabbed it first when i was reaching out for the A pushencoder…
but i still twiddle the wrong one way too often… :wink:

while on the mk2 i have grey tape all over the place…to have space for in white written notes about various scenes. and stuff… and to clearly split visually the sequencer buttons row 1-8 from 9-16…does the trick, even if the buttons on mk2 already try their best with different led colours and additional square inprints around the number on all firsts of every four count in long row…

so, tape it, babee…tape it…

I’m used to “painter” tape, I don’t know the name in english. Isn’t it the kind of tape @mpiecora use, as on @chiasticon’s picture ? Very practical, easy to write on, normally no glue after…
Not ideal aesthetically though. Maybe a thinner one…

:arrow_up: Masking tape in UK, don’t know what Americans call it though - probably “paint bleed prevention self ad-heesive tape” :joy:

Painters tape all day :slight_smile:

beige = masking tape.
blue = painter’s tape.

for this application, I’m thinking painters would be better. because no residue.

I recently bought new magnets to the mixer and Console fader so thought I’d try just giving a slight clarity around tracks, midi and scenes with the limited colour codes offered :grin:.

I don’t know if it’s that good but I’ve got a tendency to forget obvious mappings so thought I’d try these. Magnets are actually sitting there very nicely.

Edit: got blank white ones for marker pen usage as well - even with my poor hand coordination I can squeeze in almost an entire word (or like 4 characters).

Cool! Where did you get them, and how did you get them printed?
