Hi.
So, I’m quite happy with my Akai Force as a clip launch controller, but I could really use real faders for mixing. Any recommendations? Ideally just the faders. I don’t need the clip launching bit of the equation.
Thanks!

I would go for full 100mm throw faders. I use (as production sound mixers) a Icon Platfrom M+ which perfectly integrates with Scorpio field recorder.
There is also Platform X+ which is cheaper if you do not need the transport section.
Oooh. That is quite interesting - especially the X+.
If it works well for mutes in Ableton too, then it’s getting plus points for sure.
One day I tried it hooked up with Ableton, I remember all was fine.
But do not take my absolute word for it
I don’t really need the motorised faders though. This will be for on-stage mixing, DJ-ish style. So, they need to be fairly quick.
i’ve not tried it but
Apc40 great for ableton.
Yeh it has clip launching too but the macro knobs are superb for editing fx etc.
Another vote for APC40. Either generation will do. Cheaply built faders but nice resistance.
I use Softube Console 1 and Faders. Fantastic for mixing. Much more in depth than many alternatives.
I really like the Novation Launch Control XL’s faders, and as a mixer add on for Ableton it gives you what you want (pans, 2 aux sends, mute, solo, track select).
It also works well with the Akai Force.
…no need for classic long way 100mm faderways, maybe even motorized, for use on stage…
they’re only convinient for proper mix down and total recall…
short ones are way more preferable for live performance…
just in case, that’s not obvious…
best here is by far all faderfox stuff…those are built to last all rock…
This what I use for both Ableton and my Force as well. It’s berry, berry noice.
Probably getting a second one so I don’t have to shuffle it back and forth. And a third to hookup to AUM/Drambo/etc.
Then there’s my BlackBox, and BlueBox…
Yea I’d second an APC 40 - but tbh for proper ‘DJ style faders’ I’ve never used anything that’s not an actual mixer that’s felt halfway decent. It’s possibly overkill but I’d consider a cheaper XONE with USB integration, I think the 43C can act as a MIDI controller (fairly sure my PX5 can) - double check though I might be making this up.
Launch Control XL is a great unit but the faders are no good for quick throw action - they have a fair amount of resistance. Very nice for standard mixing and level control though. Edit: I dunno, I’m fiddling with mine now and depending on how loose you need them it could work actually.
Did some quick and dirty videos for reference, in case useful!

Novation Launch Control XL
(Sorry I don’t have my APC 40 any more, but I don’t think they’re as well suited to this, albeit a brilliant Ableton control)
If you want that premium feel with motorised faders, Softube fader.
Yeah I’ve never found a midi controller with faders that cut and chop as tightly and smoothly as a traditional DJ mixer.
Great for studio mixing and blending but not for DJ style quick fades
The Novation faders’ action is what I want personally for mixing tracks/channels in Ableton.
Why do you want them that fast like on the A&H?
I’ve got a Xone K2 as well and I really like it, apart from how light/fast the faders are…
Hourses for corses I suppose.
I had a failed display on my EC4, i emailed Faderfox got a new display within 2 days (for free, but i still had warranty - but didn’t need to mention), replaced it myself (was only in a socket) - very good customer support on them. Next midi controller is for sure again a Faderfox.
I think its good they also build custom midi controllers, if you ever want a perfect setup they are very worth the support.
Cheapest way to try it out is the Korg Nanokontrol 2, very small, configurable and even with transport control and solo/mute. Comes with Ableton template. I use it to “throw in” the instruments so have to the volume to max. Of course the faders are cheap but they do their job.
I had the icon platform M but did not really like it. Worked without issues but you do need a power supply because of the motor faders, I like USB powered devices. And it is fairly big.
It wasn’t specified that faders’ use would be for live.
So let’s not waste characters, since (even if OP specified it) everyone has his own way of organising the live set and motorised faders in a live scenario can be or not be a specific need.
Anyway. If budget it’s not a problem I would go for Faderfox. I’m also intrigued by Intech modular controller (they have a editor that can impart scripts at each control).
