Ableton Move : User Thread

I just opened the set from the Cloud folder and did “save as” which saved a local copy. Everything seemed to work smoothly.

Just a heads up in case someone has a similar issue. When I tried to sample from line in today the Move was stuck in resample mode. No mic, no audio in available. Did all the usual stuff (reboot, tried a new set, tried using Sampler template rather than a drum rack, etc.) to no avail.
Ended up doing a factory reset (after backing up my sets). Lost all my imported samples (bummer they can’t be downloaded except individually) but everything is working again.

Other than that (ultimately minor) glitch, I’m loving this thing to death!

Guess I just need to figure out why cloud isn’t working for me

Do you use a VPN? I’ve read about some issues with Move.Local or Cloud if you have a VPN active, though I am not sure how likely that may be the case

Have you gotten macros to work on Move? I tried and failed, i think i read somewhere that they’re not supposed to work yet either but maybe they fixed that?

No, they all seem to work fine for me. Have you tested my patch?

Unfortunately it looks like this won’t happen based on the answer at Discord yesterday:

It’s technically challenging. The time it takes to load a Set into memory varies based on its content. Another challenge is having both Sets available to transition smoothly, which exceeds our performance and memory capabilities in worst-case scenarios.

While I totally understand and agree with their reasoning, they should anyway include an option to postpone loading and launching of new Set to e.g. when next full measure is reached.

It would then be up to the user to only use small Sets, without rhythmic sections or long sustained sounds at the transitions, to make the gaps as small & smooth as possible. Or maybe even do it slightly ahead, in proportion to the size (e.g. 10ms earlier for each 10MB, or whatever).

That would be good enough for majority of cases.

At that point you could just switch it manually. We’re musicians after all. If we can’t tap a pad in time to a 4/4 beat, who can?

Yeah I’m happy to to take my chances in the real world too, god knows I need the practice, I’m always launching clips too early…

Sure, that can kinda sorta work for naturally loose and sloppy “beats” genre (which Move seems to have been created for, it seems…) but not for minimal techno or fast-paced drum & bass.

Also, most of us aren’t “musicians” in any traditional meaning of the term

Switching manually would be fine when just using move alone if the machine was accurate… but it is not instantaneous, just almost

More problematic when sending clock to other gear or with link I suspect.

Its not a tap-in-time deal though, its not even consistent so you can’t learn to play the delay, etc.

It is what it is though.

If they get the midi side more thorough, it would be easy to add another device (Sp404/Octatrack) as a sync’d loop catcher for transitions.

I can probably test it, but haven’t so far - if I upload a Drum Rack preset created in Live to Move, will I also have access to the individual “loose” samples, available to use in other racks?

I haven’t tried creating a rack yet but was wondering the same thing, otherwise you’ve got to upload each sample to the machine twice.

Yeah. Perhaps the best way to verify this would be to check what samples are included in one of the factory Racks and then see if they’re individually available?

I’ll do that when I’m back home (in 7-8 hours…).

From the manual:

When you upload a Drum Rack preset, all of the samples included in the Rack will be automatically added to the Samples page in a dedicated Preset Samples folder.

It’s gone very quiet in here since the DN2 news!

DN2 is cool but way out of my price range currently, Move still looks like a lot of fun and hopefully be getting one maybe after an update or so. MY Gas thankfully has died down.

They work, but only on Drift and only on the instrument rack that drift is inside, not on the outer instrument rack that contains the drift rack and the two fx.

Yeah I initially thought they were instant when it was just the couple of demo tracks but if you load up 4 drum racks with 64 samples it’s definitely not instant!

There’s not much to discuss! It’s easy to use, it’s not cryptic, does what it’s supposed to, doesn’t seem like there are too many bugs. It’s not really super deep and complex. Hopefully people are just making music with it.
