that is GREAT news!
I signed up for the public beta and will install later tonight.

I mean you could do it that way but by far the easiest and least clutter is a usb widi adapter plugged into move, same price as 2 cme interfaces, no wires and bi directional midi job done…
Right, but that only enables a Bluetooth midi link, correct? That is a much cleaner way of doing things, but I like having hardware midi I/o that will work with anything with a din port. I suppose it’s up to the user— if you’re going to be out and about, the widi adapter is almost certainly the way to go, but at home or in a studio or with multiple pieces of gear, breaking the usb midi out into din midi feels more capable, in which case I’d probably be using something like the u6 midi pro with the iPad.
Absolutely I’m not saying it’s the only way, just that it’s the simplest way to achieve whole midi thing with an iPad, extremely low effort and clean… fwiw I have the u6 myself also and it’s a very flexible/useful bit of kit
I got one of these as a graduation gift for my nephew - felt like a great first synth / intro to Ableton and DAW land.
If I want to learn how to use it in advance of that, is Ableton Note the same workflow?
The new midi features in beta are so ff-ing ace. Oxi and Move work flawlessly. And you can combine the power of Oxi (or other sequencers) with all the automation options in Move.
Yep - love the Widi adapter with an iPad , have been using it for months.
Scaler 2 in AUM syncs perfectly (well, at least good enough for my needs) using Ableton Link. Great to generate chord progressions with a range of midi motions and articulations.
Add a USB-C cable and Koala on the iPad makes it easy to get quick chops done as well. Can even use the Move as an audio interface to the iPad to enable direct sampling from YouTube, Apple Music etc. back into Koala - bypassing Apple’s lockouts.
iPad and Move make a great combination…
It’s similar but also feels different to me, but then again I’ve probably only used note for a few hours total and have spent much more time on the move. Both form factors have their own strengths and drawbacks, but they are largely the same in terms of capability. Move feels more immediately intuitive to me, for whatever it’s worth. Messing around with Note will definitely give you some good intuition on how Move works if you want to be able to show him a thing or two, though.
Great choice of gift. You’re a cool uncle!
There is no Scaler 3 on iPad yet, what do you mean?
Sorry, meant Scaler 2 - have edited the post
So, I’m bed ridden for a few days and I’ve decided to learn Move as a standalone unit (or paired with iPad). I swear I’ve been promoted to update the firmware in the past but when I check the current firmware in the Move itself, it says I’m on 1.2.0. When I check for updates, it just spins then stops with saying there is or isn’t a firmware update.
Thoughts? I swore I was prompted for and installed the 1.4.1 update last month.
Edit: Tethered to my phone so I wouldn’t have to enter my complex WIFI password again. Checked for update and it prompted to go to 1.4.1. WIFI said it was successfully connected to my home WIFI which was odd.
I updated my Move right out of the box with a wifi hotspot from my phone. Very quick process… like 30 seconds.
please get better, and keep on Moving.
How are you connecting them? I use a widi dongle and an audio cable, that will probably change with the new 1.5.0 fw
I was just connected via USB to the iPad so I could use it as a class-compliant soundcard. I quickly learned though that you can’t stream audio to the Move other than to use it as a fecording source. Doesn’t work how I would’ve expected. Not a deal breaker but a bit disappointing.
In standalone mode, do you only get access to that one, single groove template? Sixteenth note triplet according to the manual.
By changing the USB-C audio setting from Mic to Main Out, you will be able to send the output from the Move to the iPad.
Yes, the Move has only one groove template, which is likely “Swing 16th 66.”
I tried this intially but nothing was coming out of the headphone jack. To be clear, I am not trying to sample from the USB-C connected iPad. I had AUM setup with some tracks and AUM’s main out was set to the Move. I was testing to see if AUM’s output would be heard along with the Move’s local tracks via the headphone jack. The manual makes it pretty clear that the Move does’t work that way in standalone mode. It can only be an audio in device and not an in and out device. That mode is only supported when the Move is in control ableton mode. I checked the manual after I testednthat setup.
The manual does say, “In Standalone Mode, Move can be used as an audio input device,” but in practice, you can monitor the output from the iPad on the Move. Try selecting USB-C on the sampling screen and turning the monitor on.
