Ableton Move : User Thread

Thanks. So I guess dragging the samples into audio tracks and then exporting the project par-track is probably the best way to go. And because lots of work is involved, it’ll keep me focused on the best stuff

To record Move’s output on your phone, set the USB-C Audio setting to “Main Out” on Move.

Thanks, I did try that but didn’t work. Will try again!

Are you able to describe the phone you’re using and cables needed please?

This is what I’m using and I can’t get it to work.

I have not tried to record from move to phone but tried sampling from phone and I couldn’t get it to work without buying the splitter cable from Ableton. I either got the usual “This device uses too much power” error or nothing at all, it didnt recognise move as a device.

When you try it, does the iPhone recognise Move?

If USB audio from your phone to the Move is already working, you just need to change a setting on the Move to send its output to the phone.

Sorry for the confusion, I didn’t try sampling from phone to move I just heard it was possible. I just tried with my cables and I get the same message as @Misree saying that charger is insufficient - same as I get when trying to record from move to the phone. Made sure to have the correct usb-c setting.
Not sure what I’m doing wrong.
For recording move to phone, which cables do you use?
Thanks

I can sample usb-c to usb-c. I am guessing that the lightning camera connection kit doesn’t also let it be a USB-C audio interface.

It’s likely that, as @Misree mentioned, either the Ableton USB splitter cable or the Apple Lightning - USB 3 Camera Adapter is needed. In my case, since my phone has a USB-C port, a C-to-C cable works fine.

Ok that makes sense. I think usb-c to usb-c is the way. Thanks for your help guys

With the 1.5 updates improvements on MIDI: Could the Move be a good complement to a Digitakt 2? If they sync up well, the Move would not just offer velocity sensitive pads for playing drums or melody, but also polyphonic synth sounds in a quite compact form factor.

can you mix the audio in signal of the move to the other 4 tracks in a mixer, if i use it with an external synth?

You enable ”monitoring” in the recording menu, in the same menu you can adjust input gain. You get to that menu by pressing the record button.

That will make the inputs sound together with the 4 tracks during playback, but there’s no mixer view as such

oki nice! can you add fx to the input?

No it’s just a simple monitor/pass through

Trying to figure out where I left off; about 1000 more comments to go…
I love your Jamuary, and I hear you: moving from device view to expression. What I covered was moving from device to composition, in which case I think sequencers on the push can paint one in the a corner. (that’s my argument: that the Clip the common currency for ableton live).
As for expression, consider that Capture affords a very feeling-forward approach to sequencing. And, yes, Push 3 and any MPE device for that matter, is an instrument that rewards some practice. Yes, you are making more deterministic music with Move or with looped phrases, but I do think it addresses your interest in phrasing and making clear, musical statements.
Happy to hear back from you

PS: I do think variations view is my preferred means of getting preset shifts on the Push over saving a set with dummy clips, but I do appreciate I’m glossing over your user case. I tend to pair back my expectations in a performance setting and go with the best practices available, rather than the most ambitious approaches

anyone know you can sequence the Move with an iOS sequencer yet?

last time I checked, this was not possible.

You can’t connect ipad to move directly via type c. Only a does midi so you need something in between to send midi to the move. This is what I was told.

that is unfortunate because I can sequence Polyend Tracker and Digitakt from an iPad.

So it will work if I were to connect another synth inbetween and send the midi thru? Or do you mean that I need some sort of midi hub?

you can sequence the move from an ipad with the midi i/o routing in the public beta software version. however, Move only sends and receives midi via its USB-A port, which is a host port. in order to sequence external midi gear over USB, the iPad must be acting as a USB host.

If you want to sequence Move from your iPad, you need to be on version 1.5 or newer, AND you must convert your USB-midi to proper DIN-midi as described below.

if I wanted to connect my Move to my (rather old) iPad, I would use my CME U2MIDI cable with my Move, giving me proper DIN cables for both midi in and midi out. I would use my iRig Midi 2 with my iPad, which is a little box that I can connect via lightning, and the little box has 3 full-size midi din ports: one each for in, out, and thru. I’d be able to connect the CME midi out din cable to the iRig midi in din port, and the CME midi in cable to the iRig midi out port.

The cheapest way I think one could connect midi between iPad and Move is to buy a CME u2midi cable for move, the usb-c version of CME u2midi for the iPad side, and then use a pair of female-to-female midi couplers to get the male ends of the cables to connect to each other. total cost is ~$50-60 depending on whether you need one of the usb-c versions of the cable or if you get a second full-size usb u2midi and use a c-to-a adapter you have lying around
