I’m not sure it’s fruitful to argue about what might be possible based on a lack of information, on a thread that may not even be monitored by Elektron (maybe they give that duty to the newest employee, as a kind of hazing).
I am not an electrical engineer, but I know that rising and falling edges can be detected (also zero crossings), so one can multiply a frequency by 2. Dividing by three is done by an elaboration of the flip-flop method. A 5th sub is at 2/3 of the original frequency. So a purely analog solution is possible.
But also: the 5th sub was introduced in a firmware update, so it is probably done by digital control in this case.
A4 has internal FPGA which I believe is used also to control some aspects of the analog circuits similar to the AR, this I think is what allows them to pull those tricks off via firmware update (like that 5th option for the analog sub-osc)…
Control over suboscillator volume
P-locking arp parameters
Conditional P-locks (separate from note conditions, I mean: note could be 100% chance but the P-locks assigned to that note are 50%, 1:2, etc)
On that note, I’d love ratcheting and chance of ratcheting.
Sine wave and/or fold before the filter stage or at the very least between the two filters.
Some new sequencer tricks a la Analog RYTM Euclidean stuff —from Euclidean to Turing Machine.
Related to that: pitch modulated by LFOs quantized to scale to create melody and/or variation.
And more scales!
It’ll help if the suboscillators could have an additional 3OCT option (three octaves lower, 1/8 of osc frequency). Just so we have a little bit more flexibility to control the volume of the subosc, since most often we make one osc quieter, and usually it’s the higher one.
I would love ring mod on my A4, maybe its possible with a neighbor track to do it, but on the fx algo side it would be very dope too. (And Euklid for sure, please do it. )
It would be really cool if we could save FX and CV presets, the same way we can save sounds.
They could even be kept in the sound browser, perhaps with a small indicator next to the name to show which track they’re for.
To take it even further, imagine being able to Sound Lock FX presets!
You can do FM by LFO pretty accurate. I don’t remember the exact setting but here is some topic in the forum. Just search for it. You can do semitones as I remember.
We all wait for Something to be able to do retrigs/ratchets ) Most of A4 owners.
Sine wave before filters… For what purpose? Filtering sine wave gives just a volume drop. Sine is great for FM obviously, for being wavefolded.
My phrasing was confusing, my English is not so good. I meant I would like sine waves and ALSO I would like being able to have wave folding (and have this folding happen before the filter or at the very least between the two filters).
In other words I would love for the Analog Four to be more Buchla/Serge
Many of us likes wavefolding )) IMHO it can be done here only digitally.
I prefer to have additional independent fx. One reverb and one delay isn’t enough for my works.
BTW you can input some other synth here and filter it. It can be a digital source, anything. P.S. i have mk2
Yeah I guess it would have to be digital and it’s probably a long shot that it can be added at all.
Right now I’m sending a triangle out, passing it thru the Doepfer Waveshaper, and sending it back. It sounds great but would love to have it inside the machine!
On the Medusa, you can parameter lock a bunch of stuff on the grid, but then you can play the parameter locked steps with your hands in real time. So you can like jam out on your parameter locks, without having to hit play on the sequencer. Always thought it would be cool if the A4 had a mode where you could play back your parameter locked steps on the sequencer keys.
That is a great question. I never knew that key combo existed, and don’t think I’ve ever used it in the 4 years I’ve had an A4! Will have to try and report back
Trig preview was added +/-2 years ago to all/most machines(not sure of m:c or m:s) and has lots of very cool use cases. I think that’ll do most of what you want, though I would love a dedicated trig preview mode where you could press the trig in grid mode and it would fire off that trig with all its parameter/sound locks in one button press with no risk of accidentally deleting the trig youre trying to preview!
Try it out on the fx track of the A4, mute the fx sequencer track and lock various trigs to different delay times then trig+yes to make shit go haywire!!!
