I am looking for a semi modular synth or desktop synth as a lush sounding synth to go with my Moog DFAM and Grandmother. Any recommendations? I use an Octatrack as my sequencer and sampler. Just short one synth for that lush sound to compliment the Moog sound I have.
The Dave Smith options are lovely but expensive when tak8ng into account my other kit. I hadn’t thought of the Digitone as an option but 8 like the idea. I will take more of a look at the 0 Coast too.
Vermona has a very sweet sound. I don’t own one, but I’ve heard it in action on Vosne’s youtube channel and it always stands out from the rest of what he is playing.
It is always worth noting that any synth can sound “sweet” it’s just the ease of dialing the correct parameters. Certain synths definitely do it better than others.
You might also try some iOS apps to sample into OT. That would save you quite a bit of money.
Moog makes a Model D app as well as a Model 15 app. Those might be worth a try before you spend above $50.
the 0-coast is awesome (and a really fun compliment to the DFAM, so you should check it out). but lush it is not. monophonic, one oscillator and a mixture of east/west coast synthesis. awesome sounds and fun to explore, but you won’t get big fat pads or anything.
lush to me means polyphonic analog. vintage stuff: lots of great Roland options at various price points. modern: Deckard’s Dream. if that’s too much: OB6. still too much: Minilogue…?
Do you have any links to sounds you’re trying to emulate? Maybe some Elektronauts could chime in on sound design and which synths offer the most flexibility for the sound you’re after.
MFB Dominion 1. In my opinion, one of the best sounding analog synths since the 80’s. 3 analog oscillators with variable wave shaping, FM, ring modulation, 12 filter modes with adjustable resonance amounts. CV ins and outs to control external gear…and a lot more!
Bottom line for me…it sounds so vintage, lush
And just super organic…buy one and you’ll understand what I’m talking about!
AFAIK semimodular means monophonic or sometimes duophonic synths. I wouldn’t anticipate to get lush sounds directly without applying heavy FX like chorus and/or reverb. IMO one VCO and even two VCOs are too defined to create a sound, which I would call lush.
For lush sounds I would recommend polyphonic instruments, optionally having an unison mode, and many options for slow moving envelopes and more than one LFO. Wavetable synthesis is good for ever evolving lush sounds too.
analogue you could check out synths like the Prophet Rev2 ( 2 x DCO, 3 x ADSR, 4 x LFO), Parva (3 x DCO, 4x ADSR, 4 x LFO)
analogue/ditial hybrid like the Novation Peak (3 x NCO, 3 ADSR, 2 x LFO), or the Prophet 12 (4 x DSP-OSC, 4 x ADSR, 4 x LFO),
digital like the Virus (3 OSC, 4 ADSR, 3 LFO), Blofeld (3 OSC, 4x ADSR, 3 x LFO), Modor NF-1 (3 x OSC, 4 x ADSR, 3 x LFO)
