I want to send MIDI notes from Akai LPD8 pads through the Blackbox to my M8 to trigger samples. All 3 devices are fully updated.
I got it working but for some reason only the bottom 4 pads of the 8 on the LPD work. I tried copying the exact settings tht work on the bottom 4 pads to the top 4 pads but the hits on the top row don’t seem to go through the BB to the M8 for some reason. All the pads work perfectly fine on other devices, the problem seems to be isolated to the BB.

Went time-traveling through this thread while out of town recently and really enjoyed the discussions around OT pairing –
I mentioned in May that I’ve been pairing the OT with my BB, and this setup idea really helped solidify it – I’m loving it. I have long been after a two-sampler setup, and this one is working out great for me.
I’ve always used the Octatrack in more or less this same way, but with synths sequenced by and run thru OT. I very much like the sound of hand-LFOs, but this meant it was really difficult to play the same thing more than once (also because I’m admittedly too lazy to practice enough). I don’t have much interest in playing music out live, so this wasn’t ever too much of a concern, but it also made it especially difficult to come back to something later if I wanted to change something with the mix or arrangement. Tracks were basically recorded, then baked and done.
This two-stage approach has been really productive for me, and means I don’t have to have everything set up all the time – I’ll plug in a synth and have a sampling session with BB, then record performances with BB, OT, and a drum machine. I also wired my interface up to my mixer (to BB) so I can use software FX and instruments as sample material. That’s had the added benefit of staving off some GAS.
And the nice side-effect of doing this is I now have a naturally growing personal sample library I can pull from later - so long as I keep samples named and organized.
i had blackbox for five minutes and sent it back - i am not a sampling guy - used dt for synthesis more than samples until got bored of the sound of the filter…anyway…
Just adding a note for reference, but I just tried powering the Polyend Play from the Blackbox’s USB output and it seemed to work fine, with the Play also sending midi to the BB.
The BB in this case was being powered by USB powerbank with 2A output. I don’t know what the Play draws, but its included power supply provides 1A and the BB per the spec on the sticker requires 600mA.
I didn’t test for very long as my battery was close to flat to begin with and I’m still new to the Play so spent most of the time fiddling with midi settings. A bit of ground noise with audio from the Play being monitored through the BB, but to be expected and tolerable.
Recently set up my Blackbox to exclusively function as a USB Midi Hub (cause I didn’t have one) to control the send FX on my Zoom L6 mixer using the pots and faders on the Novation Launchcontrol XL.
All sounds are coming from the Analog Rytm with the Zoom CDR pedal and Strymon Timeline on send FX via the Zoom mixer.
I’ve had a love-hate relationship with it but the Blackbox is definitely a Swiss Army knife
Even with the launch of the featured-up bento, the blackbox is a bit of a modern classic in my book. A lot of great functionality in a workflow that for me, makes sense. Never feels like too much screen vs the knobs, and a very versatile companion to lots of other gear. Just on the right side of being over-featured for what it aims to be.
Just enough of a multitrack sequential recorder
Just enough of a looper
Just enough of a sequencer
Just enough of a multi-sampler
Just enough of a noodle box
Just enough of a sample librarian
Just enough of a granular experimentalist
Just enough of a clip arranger
No I do not, tho I miss them. It’s the only thing I actually miss a lot, apart from the occasional Prophet 12 pang.
This is all material I’ve recorded before, put together in a new context. And you’re right, there’s both GenLoss and CXM reverb going on here, imprinted into the samples. The strings are from the OP-1 and you can kinda tell they stand out with their substantially cleaner sound. Not sure how I feel about that. But they’re in there now.
