Ordering works indeed by file name (see manual for further details on the naming conventions for multisamples) if the wav files contain no note metadata. If they do contain any note metadata, the latter will always take precedence over the file name. Just mentioning it here in case.
Btw Iād concur that copying the desired one-shots into a folder would be the best approach for several reasons:
- velocity layers if needed
- more polyphony
- quite easy to set up and to extend, perhaps even easier using the file manager of a computer
Another way would be to use one (drum focused) preset to record the drums into the sequencer, then resample the sequence as a clip and copy the clip into the instrumental preset. Naturally, if you intend to control everything including drums by MIDI, then this will not be the best approach for this purpose.
Thanks for your insights. Yeah, the naming convention is quite straightforward, so I think the folder approach and Load All is going to work best for me.
I do mostly control stuff in real-time using midi (sequenced from a Squarp Hapax), so rendering to audio clips is not ideal. (I do often have a couple of looped audio clips to use as transitions).
I use pretty much the same approach to trigger all the risers/fx etc in my live set but itās definitely a good way to have a drum kit on one pad.
Was consider the Ableton Move for the first time and i was wondering if it would be nice to pair it with the Blackbox.
aside from the ability to use it as a tiny portable midi controller with mpe,
i think its neat to be able to sequence and arrange tracks with a built in pad grid like that. samples, synths, drums. 4 tracks i s the only limitation i worry about, but thatās workable sort of-
If its just a supplementary tool along with the blackbox. i could bounce 4 tracks to a pad in the blacbox, or even single tracks to their own pads, then create 4 more in move, keep stacking and layering them and arrange into a full track with fx/mixing/compression/master eq/lfos and envelopes in the 1010. I think they would complement each other pretty well. if they just combined those two things into one, it would potentially be incredibly powerful, but the storage space alone (up to at least 1tb with a micro sd card) on the Blackbox is worth using them together in a very portable setup
Sadly, no MPE on Move. Thatās only on Push 3.
ah dang, well still a nice midi controller, i imagine. and smaller than the lpp mk3 i typically take with me in my backpack
on another note, i wonder what this workflow is exactly? possibly capturing loops as clips on different pads and setting recToPlay so he can layer the feedback reel loops into a soundscape?
Iāve read a few interviews with him (big fan of his work) and as I understand in the live performances he is building everything on to the tapeloop and processing it as it goes. The Bbox is probably used for playing back sounds to add to the loop (in the video it also looks like nothing it plugged into the Bbox in socket !)
blackbox use as drum module source with acoustic drums also triggering dub cords with external pads.
Hi, so I did the 1010ās āBlackbox Owner Surveyā, that was fun, and was wondering if I happened to be the only person who answered the last question (āname one featureā¦ā) along the lines of ācan we please have the option to set the display for black and white / grayish rather than the lovely-lovely blue-fuchsia so that the interface feels and looks more like S-4 or OPāXY etcā? No doubt there are other advanced improvements to be made all much more sophisticated and smart, but Iād be happy to hear whether anybody else had a similar eyes-saving UI request? Nothing important really, just curious. Thanks!
As much as I love 1010Music machines, their external appearance and UIās look almost embarrassingly ugly to me.

The BlackBox is absolutely the finest looking piece of musical gear in both form and GUI on the entire planet, all of my other very fancy and expensive state of the art music equipment glows bright green with envy.
Iām glad our differing opinions can live as neighbours here on the internet forever.
To be honest, itās the UI colours of the Blackbox reminding me of cyan and magenta in computer graphics that makes the BB feel really approachable for me.
It reminds me of a time in computing where you expect a GUI to be at best lists of text options, have a basic folder structure for files, and was sort of at a scale of complexity you could have a mental map of the whole thing.
