bugfix update:

2.0.E Includes several bug fixes:

  • Files that are over 12 minutes and 44.1kHz don’t play correctly
  • Sometimes MIDI clock sync won’t work correctly when pausing and resuming the external gear
  • Attempting to play slices 98-128 on the grid keyboard will crash the unit
  • MIDI Pad note was not available in the template for a blank pad
  • With long samples, the text on the waveform screen would step on the neighboring parameter.

I haven’t been following BB but it looks like there have been loads of updates since it’s release. Can it sequence midi CCs now?

Sample preview in the load menu has always sounded a little different than how it plays in the preset. Like for several firmware’s now.
Don’t make yourself crazy over it.
But as someone else said, you might want to edit the end of those samples consider trimming them (destructive, but helpful) or just pulling in the end position.

It was likely poor sampling/editing technique to begin with. Sadly I’ve not managed to get back to the BB and play with it since. Glad to know I wasn’t imagining things.

It’s worth noting that USB Midi on the Blackbox is a bit shaky.

Is this still an issue with latest OS? Just got my BB and couldn’t get USB midi to work on my first attempt. I’ll try again this evening.

In my experience, everything related to USB on the BB (including power) is very hit-or-miss. The only device I’ve been able to get to work reliably via USB is my midifighter (which is somehow rock solid). Everything else has been dodgy.

In my experience, yes. Once it works, it works. But getting there is sometimes a bit of a random experience.

sounds arkward…
I want to buy a BB but what do you mean with unreliable USB connection. It doesn’t connect, or it loses the connection ?

Look, we should not make this into something it’s not. On occassion, for me, the USB midi doesn’t connect at once. It’s like the blackbox just doesn’t know that you plugged something into it. But then, after some time, it always works out and once it does, it’s stable and steady. In my case, we’re talking a few minutes of hassle, and mostly, it doesn’t happen at all but just works right away.

It’s the usual USB nonsense, probably not even related to the blackbox but just the silly variations of this so-called standard.

Problem: Some controllers have lots of LEDs and draw more power than Bb offers - they don‘t initialize correctly.

For example:

  • Midi Twister.
  • Launchcontrol Mk2

Solution: dim the LEDs as far down as possible. This mostly works, but sometimes is not enough for reliable operation.

It doesn’t recognize the device you plug into it, or power it or, if it does, causes the device to halt, crash, or behave oddly.

Basically, take nothing for granted with the USB ports. You think,”it’s powered by USB. I can power this with anything” but in reality you have to use a charger with quite significant amp output (the one that came with your iPhone won’t work) and a special USB cord (I believe the Chroma Cable are still the only ones officially approved for use). If you don’t, it will crash, error our when recording at unpredictable times, go into a cycle where it blinks on and off forever or other weird stuff.

The same is true for its device port. You think “It’s USB, I can plug anything in there” but if it has any power requirements you likely cannot, and I haven’t found any rhyme or reason to it. If there’s specific gear you’re thinking of using with the BB, you should check here or on the 1010 forums for people using it successfully first.

I got a 0.5Amp PSU with mine and it didn’t perform properly. I contacted 1010 and got this response below.
Since using a 2A PSU I haven’t had a problem.

I run my BB exclusively from a basic rav power branded usb battery and a fancy Roland cable (because it’s orange and I had a small gift card for Patchwerks) with my Faderfox EC4 powered by and communicating via the device port. Never once had an issue.

I didn’t have too much of a problem with various devices, but I mostly used the Blackbox for slurping down external patterns triggered with the Blackbox’s BPM.

Were you sequencing anything more complicated, or did you have issues connecting to begin with?

Connection. Zero contact. But once it worked, it worked flawlessly.

Here’s a little ambient noddle on my blackbox, as I’m tinkering with new ideas. I posted this one in the Chase Bliss Habit thread awhile ago, since all the samples go through a Habit and into the blackbox, where it’s all put together. But I figured maybe a 1010 user or two might be interested as well -

I was having a little noodle with the blackbox last night and had my first experience of something just sounding bad with it.

Plugged guitar into it via the Walrus ACS1 into Boss RV500 and it just sounded blurgh and obviously needed input gain cranked. It also sounded much better turning off the BBs compressor.

I’m assuming this is an impedance matching problem. I tried putting the zoom h5 in between (through the 3.5mm input on the mic capsule - too lazy swap cables) and taking the line out from the zoom to the BB and it sounded better, but plugging headphones into either the zoom or the walrus still sounds much better.

Gonna try again using the proper inputs on the zoom, but it sounds like it needs a proper instrument di and preamp between the guitar output and BB input. Will also test via mixer and audio interface, but I was hoping to just be able to plug straight in.

Anyone else recording guitar into BB? What’s your setup?
