Is the Blackbox good for glitch type music? I’m working on a project where I need to do some glitchy stuff. Not too crazy, but things like stutter, pitch shifting, granular, reverse, changing loop points etc…
If anyone here is from Denver and recently picked one up used, please shoot me a private message. I’ve got a question.
A few months ago I impulsively bought a Blackbox for a really great price, but I’ve barely touched it other than to record modular jams into it. This latest update pushed me to explore it further and now that I’ve spent all day with it I must say, it’s a really special sampler. Something about its workflow encourages a loose, free-flowing structure, and the improved granular and added modulation parameters really brings samples to life.
I honestly wish I didn’t like the Blackbox so much. I have way too many samplers, and all of them are great in their own way…
I posted this in the 1010 forum but for anyone who might be interested, I’m posting it here to -
Master eq works fine on any new project started since 1.9
It works on random (or so it seems) sample slots on any projects started before 1.9 - so some are dead, some are not.
Some slots seem cursed, the eq just don’t affect them. Loading up a new sample into these new slots doesn’t make a difference. They are just excluded from the master eq (to interesting effect, although I guess it’s not supposed to work like that).
However, the slots that do work, loading any sample into them are affected by the master eq. So if I really want my drum loop on the master eq, I can load it up into another slot where it seems to work, and the effect is applied.
While obviously this isn’t the intended result, it’s an interesting idea to let each sample slot pass or bypass through the master eq. I wouldn’t mind this bug turning into a feature, where I can just tick “Master EQ on / off” for each sample.
Holy cow, I need sell some stuff…
Okay, so the master EQ works. It’s not buggy.
But it only works on Output 1.
Which makes total sense
So yeah, I’m gonna go and get one of them pointy hats now and stand in a corner for about a week or so.
Don’t forget to bring your BlackBox, battery pack, and headphone’s with you!
All right. This could turn out to be quite a good week, as it were.
Help me out please, did you manage to find Quant Size for Clips?
It was there in 1.7, right?
Or am I hallucinating?
Haven’t updated yet, mostly because I haven’t seen anything new mentioned that I need. Someone mentioned a different look - is it now possible to tell visually when pads are in their release phase? Or indeed to differentiate the different pad types?
I guess there’s no movement on being able to set a specific number of bars to record?
I wouldn’t know, sorry, mate. I never use that feature. Maybe I should, though
It’s ok, I just now checked on the freshly arrived second Blackbox which still has 1.6.5 on it.
It’s there.
So it appears that Clip launch quantization is missing from 1.9.3
No updates on any of that functionality. Although with the MIDI recording, if you have another sequencer then you can presumably automate recording any number of bars pretty easily.
The 1010 people really do mean it when they say it’s a beta
The master EQ is pretty damn effective for opening up a track. I almost don’t dare do an A / B test with this and my SiX / Fusion-rig.
But I have to, of course. In fact, I might be assembling such a test right now. With some dread. But still.
Yes, and I’m totally ok with that, it gives me a sense of danger and excitement.
Agreed, I love how attenuating hi mids boosts the treble slightly. Here is a screenshot of a parametric eq attenuating at 3.5kHz:
Make sure you cross-post! (I know you and @circuitghost have cross-posted a lot, so my thanks to both of you on behalf of someone who seems to be AFBB* all the time… )
*Away from Blackbox
Ah yes, that’s a possibility I guess - thanks. One of the harder things is deciding to record, say, 117 bars then remembering to stop at the correct point. I could now automate that with Cirklon, good call.
