Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Spoiler free discussion)

Should have grabbed it when you had the chance. Who knows if your next convo with your Boss will one-shot you

Well, all 4 temples done, and the next bit that followed, now I’m let loose on the world to find wherever the next locations is (which I assume I already know lol) - but now the game feels in a nice place where the objective is, ā€œgo out there and find it / exploreā€ - thats actually a nice directive. So I kinda feel off the hook now for a while, I think it’ll just be a chill explore fest for a while.

I definitely think there’s something in that idea - it suits this style of Zelda game so well, and yet it still lives by the law of the ā€˜quest marker’. But Nintendo could definitely take it in different directions. For instance I was thinking how, depending on your level, hearts, stamina, that chests you find throughout the game actually ā€˜levelled up’ also - so the reward is based on the point you’re at in the game.

Others have mentioned the idea that memories should play out in sequential order no matter which one you find - and that’s a great idea too.

The balance could go any which way, but Nintendo definitely have a great platform to build on and evolve. But it could also go in the wrong direction.

I find the whole Saturday morning cartoon vibe on the main cast to be just a bit too kiddy. And there’s also conflicting story moments, for instance on one story line you know what’s going on with Zelda, but on the other everyones like what’s going on with Zelda? It’s all just a bit daft.

Will be truly interesting to see where mainline Zelda goes next, both in terms of systems and level design, but also story.

Still playing away at this one with a love/hate mix.

I can’t really be arsed with the dungeons. Actually can’t really be bothered with fighting full stop. That side of it just doesn’t feel, well, Elden Ring quality for me. Has Zelda fighting really moved on since OoT? That’s maybe harsh but I guess I just feel a little done with it.

Completed 1 dungeon. Got to the boss in another and then thought fuck it and went off exploring with the personal goal set of having to find all the map pieces, Tears and some shrines along the way. I like it much more as an exploring/light puzzle game to be honest.

Not sure I’ve got the drive to complete it but I like the thought of hanging out in the world and uncovering random shit along the way.

I know it’s superior to BotW but honestly, BotW made a much more significant impact with me.

I highly recommend beating the game. If you need advice to beat certain bosses. Message me.

I stumbled on what I suspect is the thing after these by sheer accident. I still need to go do the Zora quest. I find it really cool but also kind of odd how you can stumble into different parts of the main quest, or do things completely out of order.

[details="major plot, dungeon, main quest and story spoilers. Enter at your own riskā€ ]

I went into the storm cloud which led me to the fifth sage. I thought the quest for their dungeon was pretty cool although I hated the Bossfight afterward. I was absolutely not expecting this at all.

This drives me absolutely nuts, and had me seriously questioning both my sanity and the order I was doing things.

It’s moved on a bit for sure, but it’s also bittier, there’s less to discover (because you already knew most of it from the first one) and the world seems strangely spread out and somehow less characterful, despite being, er, the same world. If that makes sense. But the same terrible Zelda voice actor is still in it.

Still, Ultrahand is way better than magnesis, which I now discover I disliked

I will do if I go for it. To be honest, there are a load of handy, largely spoiler free guides online that I’ve naughtily resorted to for the odd shrine my old brain can’t work out.

I’ve got like 20 completed shrine things to cash in for hearts/stamina so will get a bit more pumped up before returning to the dungeons.

I oddly really like helping a certain chap with signs too.

Once you do what you need to do in the Lost Forest, combat is less annoying

Honestly me too. Usually, I can’t figure it out because I completely missed some object I should interact with or side room.

I accidentally went there too, however I didn’t see where I needed to go after that.

When it was time I was fumbling forever before checking online

Yeah, this was totally fumbled in execution. Just one [thing] spoiled a pretty major twist in the main plot, and then the last [thing] answered every question regarding [plot] and still the game goes on tugging at the thread of a sweater that has already unraveled.

It was pretty silly and even when its time to confront, the payoff was still meh

Current progress

I had a couple stumbles, for instance I bee-lined straight for Faron, and was doing heaps of dumb gamer things to try and get things activated, eventually figured I needed to visit Kakariko first to trigger that space. The same happened with the last quest, with the green Head thing, I ran off checking out all the depots, again trying dumb gamers things but I had to place the head inside the mould to trigger those spaces to actually be ;online; . Kinda funny bits, the activation points were all access denied for me. I needed a slight online tip to realise I was just one action short of that part.

I seem to have some Yiga clan side quests to complete presently which again opens the world up for exploring, I suspect the final boss is next as I now have the Destroy Ganondorf quest. But, I have the same feeling now as I did in BOTW, the main game is done, I can pepper with side quests, and chill my way towards that final boss, grinding a bit and stocking up on things.

I’m not in a rush to get there and have been pretty busy. Might not nail it for a couple weeks till I have a clear block of time.

The 5th Sage quest was awesome, so was the mech. Although I thought it was weird the sacred stone attached to the robot, Link was hearing all the voices, I was like ā€œohhhh, Links the 5th sage!!!ā€ . But he wasn’t lol. But that funny thing happened where Quest lines were activated at the end of killing that robot boss, and immediately ā€˜complete’. It felt like I did the game in the wrong order. It feels like you’re really supposed to smash out the dungeons first in this game, and then do the rest from there. Same thing happened to me at the Deku tree, quest revealed: ā€˜complete’. I’m still happy with the way it wen’t down for me, glad I did the memories in order.

Anybody here play Shadows of the Collosus?

Lol, I finished TotK and thought ā€œwow, that was a pretty good game! Shadows of Collosus was awesome, thoā€ :grinning:

My feeling is it’s not a sequel, but an iteration on the BOTW engine/world. I’m happy with that. But, I think all that hype curiosity has been replaced with this is still BOTW, but a completely restructured game within it. A cool thing to be sure.

The pragmatic makes me believe that this is the game they wanted BotW to be. But I think the sink that was development of that game, followed up by the terrible WiiU sales and subsequently the poor sales of Skyward Sword meant that they had to curb their ambitions for the game they released.

I’m inclined to say that TotK IS a game they spent 10 years developing- that it was the end goal with BotW being a test of the concept.

I’m also inclined to say the Shadows of the Collosus was a more streamlined experience of the emotional beats that made TotK so fantastic(maybe minus the freedom, but to some that could be seen as a negative- i see it as a positive, tho)
In the same way that those choose your own adventure books never hit as hard as legitimate stories(despite, probably, being more difficult to write)

I’m actually curious how it will be to go back to BOTW at some stage in the future after TOTK. Haven’t tried yet.

But yeah ultimately, the same format exists - shrine, dungeon/beast, memories, koroks etc.

I wonder if it’s time for a more ā€˜adult Zelda’ after this. Kinda like how TP was to WW. Something that gives Elder Scrolls a run for its money. I know we won’t fully get that. It’s been Gorons, Zoras, Rito and Koroks for quite a while now. But I wouldn’t put it past Nintendo to shake all that stuff up in future.

Thing is I guess we have amiibo, which ultimately are kids toys (I’ve never bought one). Zelda strikes this interesting balance between being adult (puzzling, certain adult themes) but also quite kiddie (Yonobo, Tulin etc). I’m not sure Zelda can ever break away from that, as keeping it all somewhat PG, yet with challenging enough gameplay for adults, pushes sales into the stratosphere.

But I’ve quite a few gamer friends who can’t touch Zelda due to the kiddie / anime factor.

There is a wide variety of dolls and such in Japanese culture that range from kids toys to quite serious adult / religious icons. I don’t understand Japanese culture well enough to know where the Amiibos fit, but I’m not so sure they are for kids only.

Birth rates are down across Asia, but particularly Japan. I visited an island theme park at the beginning of my current trip - the extensive gardens that were more teen/adult oriented were very poorly maintained, but the kiddie playgrounds were in top shape and busy. So I could see either doubling down on the kiddie stuff for affluent parents or a shift towards more adult designs. (but hopefully not H-Zelda, Dan artists seem to have that covered)

I’ve been wondering if the sexualization of characters in TOTK is intended to nudge teens towards hooking up or not.
