Your modulars (Part 2)

I keep putting off the Optx v2, but it would the be right tool even if I keep it in a 4MS pod to pair with Push 3.

I think I started looking at the After Audio stuff because I really like using the Eurorack BlueBox, but I don’t want to buy a 2nd one, and a connector between setups would, if I’m being honest, have its own challenges.

Push 3 + Optx v2 does make sense.

There’s also these guys, which is overkill for my needs!

Hey there! I made a video demo for the new Schlappi Engineering module if anyone is curious:

I’ve watched enough of @Stazma 's videos that I even read the “Hey there!” in his accent.

Downsized a lot over the past year, used to have two rack brutes and now I’m down to one (though still have the other case for expansion down the road).

Definitely fell into the pitfall of buying too much without a real plan. Now I’m at a spot that I feel like I have what I need, save for the Locutus expander for the Assimil8or which will be the next purchase (and probably last for a very long time).

Wow – no shortage of mixers/VCAs in your rack!

Is the Assimil8or your only sound source or do you use one of the Maths channels as an oscillator too?

Thankfully Maths can also be a VCA/ Mixer if I ever run out. :stuck_out_tongue:

Often I use the Aikido as a distortion. It’s sort of like the Grandmother mixer where past 12oClock it starts distorting but it’s far more aggressive on the Aikido. The two are also linked up so functionally it’s one 8 channel mixer with lots of routing flexibility. Plus the side chain and spectral envelope features are a lot of fun.

In general aikido also takes the sub mixer roll where tang is the main mixer before going out. I do with there was CV to the panning on Megatang but I do like the send and return feature on it. Kinda want the expander for it so I could route the MFX and Timiszoara to two different sends but not a priority.

I will use maths as an oscillator from time to time. Usually just sampling it into Assimil8or though to free up Maths for other roles.

Assimil8or really does so much that I don’t feel like I need anymore. It can do single cycles, drum hits of course, weird drone shit, sample CV.

It can do wavetables by adding single cycle oscillators to each of its 8 tracks you can link the tracks together and then cross fade between them. Even do it in stereo, though you lose resolution from 8 cycles to 4 of course. Example of that here, video not mine.

But I’ll admit I was baiting a bit here cuz there’s more gear surround the rack lol.

I’ve also got an Analog 4, Moog Studio 3, Hydrasynth, Matriarch, Minibrute 2s, and Grandmother nearby so no shortage of sequences, modulation, filters, prcoessing, or analog oscillators nearby. This also explains why I have that many mixers (despite those synths also having mixers themselves).

Originally in my mind I wanted to have one of those standalone space ship eurorack setups that did every voice in rack but quickly learned that I’d rather do drum duties elsewhere and I really wanted to leave all my synths for sound design. And instead of thinking of each synth having their own “duty” (one synth being my Pad / Chord Machine while the other does basses and leads) I narrowed down what I wanted so that I could have everything integrate and process each other if I wanted.

And a lot of it started as simply modules that helped improve the matriarch. Even if it’s simply giving samples of different flavors of noise or oscillators from the Assimil8or to replace (or add to) the Matriarch. Or do wild things like sample the Matriarchs oscillator and copy that to all 8 channels of the assimilator and send it back through the matriarch to get 8 oscillators in it rather than just 4.

Current.
Underneath it out of shot is a Malevolent. Which really is a modular synth with a keyboard attached. I use Malevolents oscillators, filter and envelopes with the rack mounted stuff. Loads of options.
Since building the rampage Im using the 2 pittsburg envelopes less and less. Might ditch one (they are very cool).

M185 sequencer is totally brilliant. Glad I waited so long before building it, I think I would have fucked it up if I had started it a year ago.

I also have an aikido and I think often about having a second. Seeing it is convincing.

The sidechain envelope and spectral envelope are so unexpectedly useful and doubling up sounds like a blast.

I have a Squid Salmple and a few other voices and the extra four channels and two envelopes would be amazing.

Great rack, thanks for sharing.

My first actual Make Noise module - I have a skiff and both 0-devices, but I realised I needed some more VCAs, as one does, and this does that and a lot more - more mixers are always useful too. It should do fun things with the PLL alongside as well, another recent acquisition I’m learning how to use.

The ModDemix came with an alternate and far more boring black aftermarket panel, but I went back to the original as I prefer the MN design aesthetic.

Nice! Moddemix is a gem.

If you’re in need of any inspiration, check out this comment by Luke Teaford with a bunch of cool ways to make the most of Moddemix — he uses it for all kinds of crazy stuff (reverb, filter, etc.)

Oh nice one; I’ve been looking up what I could find about the ModDemix online, but didn’t see that one before.

This is what I cut it back to. Had to turn Nse upside down to fit in a Pod34X and I have always had XOH upside down to make the little cables feasible but Mojave and Aurora are magnificent:

I don’t really need CV manipulation with these (though throwing noise at them is fun, I’ve found), but manual knob tweaking is perfect for these Qu-Bits. I way prefer it to software processing.

Side note, almost sold everything from a 104HP setup. But a few are still hanging around. Lesson is the more niche or unknown your module is, the harder it will be to sell if you don’t get on with it. My former Make Noise stuff and to some extent Erica Synths flew off my proverbial private seller shelf. But some of the Qu-Bits are very hard to shift despite offering them at ridiculously low prices.

I’ve been slowly picking up the pieces of a Doepfer polyphonic rig whenever I found the modules on deep discount. I finally managed to get the quad envelopes and filters on the cheap to bring this to a state I consider complete. Modular polyphony probably isn’t the most sensible/cost-efficient goal, but I’ve been using most of the other modules in other contexts so I figured “just this once” (famous last words)…

I did internal wiring of the audio path between VCO, VCF, and VCA. Also, one of the ADSR envelopes is internally wired to the VCF. Without this there would have been a lot more external patching! Everything is normalled, so can be easily overridden as necessary.

In terms of ease of build – I wish Doepfer would have placed the jumpers for the internal wiring in more convenient positions; getting to some of them was quite fiddly! For example, to do the internal wiring of the quad ADSR to the VCA I would have had to disassemble the VCA. That would have cleaned up even more cables, leaveing just the patches to the envelope gates, but I had no desire to pull apart an expensive module!

Whatcha gonna do with the last 6-8(?)HP?

I’m tempted to pickup another ALM MFX for end of chain, but I’ve got one already in another case and I don’t love redundancy.

Any suggestions for a small stereo in/out FX unit?

I’m not sure I actually need the A182-4 switch there. So I could maybe go as big as 10-12 hp for the FX.

One of the Noise Engineering Versios? All can be flashed to other firmware pretty easily.
