Your modulars (Part 1)

Not 100% sure yet, but the ones I’ve played around with in other people’s systems and enjoyed were: Clouds, Rings, Elements, and Plaits.

Maybe some others, but those are the ones that stuck out as being super fun.

I don’t own any of them, but the Calsynth versions of the Mutable modules are very well respected and touted for their reliability/robustness on Modwiggler:

Disting EX has a Matrix Mixer mode. It works as you would hope… if you’re comfortable with the UI of the EX.

I have the Calsynth Pachinko, which is Marbles in 12hp (Émilie has asked that clone makers rename their modules). It is solidly built, and quite attractive. My main problem with it is my general problem with Mutable modules: too many odd modes, hidden states, button combos to memorize, and knobs doing different things in different ranges. It convinced me to buy the Stochastic Inspiration Generator, and I have just ordered Clank Chaos, both in the same zone but with more fine-grained control and more independent channels. My interaction with Calsynth was efficient and pleasant, and people on ModWiggler rave about their service when something goes wrong or a nonstandard request is made. I would purchase from them again without hesitation!

We have just moved to a new and much better apartment. I put Three Body in its new home in the 84hp double case for the first time (everything either moved in the 104hp skiffs, which have good boxes that can cope with 80hp of installed modules, or in smaller module boxes), but I have not built anything else yet. This is the dining table; synth stuff will live in the cabinet behind for now, and I will play on a chair near it soon, but eventually it will all move to wire shelving in the second bedroom. I didn’t even power the case up; clearing the dining table and arranging the kitchen and bathrooms are priorities, and I am too exhausted at the end of the day to even keep up with social media, let alone make music. Things will stabilize in a couple of weeks.

That Porlex grinder is pretty awesome, for the coffee nerds. Mini is for travel Bonmac #1, regular is for v60 pourovers. They can be a little slippery so you may want a grippy thing.

I like the v1 Veils (prefer the knobs) and I also wish there were more Blinds clones. In VCV you can have a lot of fun with all the Tides you can eat (at both audio and modulation rates!), plus Veils and Blinds to taste for slowly undulating things. I have speced out an all-Calsynth system many times but haven’t taken the plunge.

I have two Porlex grinders, each bought in Japan, but they are sitting idle right now, because I have a 1zpresso K-max, which can be seen at the right here. It was bought because my fancy electric grinders were all 110v so they stayed in Canada. I hadn’t expected my partner to find a deal on a 220v espresso machine on the other side (owners were moving to Japan), but the K-max is good enough to grind for that daily, and portable enough to take travelling (have done several times), though if space were really at a premium, I’d go with the Porlex.

I sold Intellijel Quad VCA (design based on Veils v1) to get Veils 2020, no longer available, but Calsynth has a full-sized clone of it. This is an exception to my general grumpiness about Mutable above.

Mmmmmm Three Body into Three Sisters.

That’s good to know - I’ve found that I much prefer simple one button/knob per function devices. Especially with music making time being hard to come by these days, anything where I have to waste potential playing time with looking up manuals or videos gets annoying fast.

I paused my modular journey for a while. But I replugged and reworked my “teletype system” with the newly received Three Sisters + Cold Mac.
Three Sisters pairs very well with Nearness in my opinion !

Finally “finished” my 3 cases. Modulargrid.

This looks like a mighty system :sunglasses:

Do you power the 0-Ctrl from the case psu ?
If so: did you need to modify it?

Yes and no. I have powered it from case power before, and modified it in a few ways - 1 was to remove the DC barrel jack and make a euro harness. Another leaves the barrel jack, but wires in a hardness underneath which plugs into a multi-harness that plugs into a 2nd DC jack on the case. Either way, works perfectly in both instances.

Thanks ! That’s useful!

I read somewhere that powering it from the case could lead to grounding issues and I never tried.
I really like it and would love to have it in the case, so I will do give a try :sunglasses:

Optx v2 pre-orders are up!

I’ve wanted one of these to use with Push 3, but QMMG hopes have it on the back-burner for me.

I liked the convenience of having ADAT in my modular setup but hit issues with lack of word clock. I have only tried ES-10 but I found using a combo of Motu 828es, 8pre caused crackles and pops. I can’t speak for the Optx v2 but in my setup I needed proper word clock sync to ensure everything was properly locked in and not rely on the clock sent over ADAT. Went with a Ferrofish Pulse 16 and it works great

Would you mind developing? I am considering putting my own Make Noise trilogy in a dedicated case at some point.

@slicetwo nice case!
How do you feel about the self contained make noise semi together ? Is it comparable to a serge panel, enough on its own?

Don’t know enough about Serge, but I love it. Makes it easy use them and keep them patched, and mentally, it makes me feel good. Haha

Here’s a link to the various photos I took while doing it. Let me know what questions you have!
