Your modulars (Part 1)

Used to have a Plaits. Sold it to gain space in my rack. Now eyeing an 8hp clone or an 8hp Braids clone. Any idea on the Braids kick compared to Plaits?

I cannot comment on the kick algo here, but…

I will say if you are going with an 8hp clone, the braids version seems like it has much better ergonomics, while the plaits version seems cramped.

I had an original braids and then got the 8 hp version with the sliders. Didn’t miss the 16hp at all.

Thanks
I had a blast with Plaits driven by a Jasmine & Olive Tree Traffic. I was using the DX7 patches on Plaits and liked it a lot  Willing to try it now with Braids. Have to say from what I hear on YT demos, I like a lot the algos on Braids.

Braids is awesome. I don’t have one right now, but I may get another one at some point.

I loved using it for percussive/drum sounds, modulating through the algos with sequences and random cv.

Edit: Traffic is also awesome

Looking forward to try Braids. I had a good deal on a second hand mint clone from Codex Modulex. I can always come back to a Plaits in case I do not get on well with Braids.
And yes Traffic is really nice. Have not yet tried the 2 other alt FW Water and Hotel though…

ā€œRenaissanceā€ firmware & the Chord algos on Braids (env off) is basically the untamed version of Qubits Chord module, as Braids can go much wider in frequency and it offers even more chords and mod inputs.

there’s a difference between mutable modules and anything else, it’s like the foundation of nearly all ā€œdigitalā€ grain like/chord like/modal synthesis modules/fx boxes you’ve seen in the past years.

And how do you like the Wear & Tear ?
Very curious about this one.

It is a really solid module. Only complaint is I want the tremolo to run slower, so I mostly keep the depth off for it. Using the module with something that drones is a lot of fun and builds interesting textures…especially with some delay and reverb.

Amazing what some cardboard can do.
Sure I could fill the spare hp with modules right now. But Im not going to. Ive got projects to finish.

Later down the track I’ll add more diy modules.

Yesterday, I received my stand from Noizzyhardwood. The worst part of this is losing a place for BlueBox desktop, but I think I’m getting the Eurorack version?

Beads: I thought this would be a good home for it and a great way to add in delay, reverb and granular tools.

Bela Gliss I think would be another great to way to add a performance control. I can’t think of anything better with the extra 4hp. I have one in the other rack that I only use to record drawn in modulation and I love it for that.

This is the plan so far

I have reracked my system today (for no seemingly good reason), but I’m looking forward to patching it tonight.

There are various modules from Whimsical Raps that have attained cult status due to being unobtanium for several years (since the parts shortage, maybe?). Available again now but I have no idea for how long:

Kind a on the fence. Don’t need more modules but Cold Mac seems like it would be interesting because it’s always been considered quite esoteric.

I’ve often considered that model! Let us know how it is when you get it will you? Especially curious if this is still fine to carry or a bit too heavy / large. I have their regular 84/104hp 6U case (I asked for 94hp:), which is super light and small to carry so I’d imagine that the one you bought is still pretty good to carry with public transport to a gig. Curious to hear your findings!

I will indeed but patience is the word now as Alberto has some big deadlines and waiting time is 12-16 weeks… That is ok though; in the meantime I am planning on other modules like a sequencer (might be a Moskwa II + Ostankino…) as well as a ā€œrethinkā€ of my system…

126hp = 64cm so with the case structure, I should look at something like 75cm width.
9U = 40cm so, again with the case structure, I should look at something like 50cm height.
I have asked Alberto to remove the shoulder strap as I am not planning to go on public transport on a regular basis… Anyway where I live there is NO public transport  Furthermore, a shoulder strap to carry such a big case was not something I would have liked…
What I have done also is remove the PSU he offers to go with another system I was advised with a filter to cut down on noise: https://dpw.se/product/dc1-dc-filter based on this: https://youtu.be/tizxIvpDV0A

Yeah. The Cold Mac seems very useful for people who own it. I also am on the fence. I love logic stuff, but don’t use all my utilities as much as I should. I’m interested in other people’s uses.

This is going to cost you more than a good drum machine. Unless there are specific modules you have fallen in love with, please think it over carefully.

I would try the VCVRack clone before you purchase to get a feel for it:
