Your kicks on the Syntakt

True*, but that is also what mastering is for, which (today more than ever) can be done in the DAW

*But it is also true for Techno.

For a commercial record you use a DAW. You’d need a whole studio full of expensive gear to do it with only hardware.

That’s such a blanket statement - there are many, many commercial records out there that are recorded in a bedroom with minimal gear. Also ā€œtechnoā€ - there isn’t universal techno sound that you need to comply to, the style encourages experimentation and is against the grain by definition.

Yep. Recorded/mixed/mastered on laptops that cost about the same as a single Elektron device.

Have you seen any of Jeanne’s work?

That’s simply not true, tons of electronic music is made long before laptop and daw exist, without fancy outboard. I have heard Jeanne’s work, yes, but I’m not familiar with the process behind

My point is that one can make releasable music only by recording stereo sound from whatever crappy sampler or drum machine they have, with minimal processing to bring the loudness to what is consider a standard. Everything else is adhering to conventions imposed by an increasingly conformist music industry.

I don’t intend to bring myself into this, but the stuff on my youtube is just from the stereo-outs of the respective device, there’s no DAW or post-processing involved (in other words, no process  ).

However, for a release I will improve the recording in a DAW how ever much is needed to bring it to the standard I agree with myself on :stuck_out_tongue:

(That ā€˜much’ is is not that much - EQ, a bit M/S widening, a limiter.)

Apart from that, I love weird sounds, experimentation and seemingly-odd choices

Just saying, Electronic music OGs would never have released a thing if you absolutely needed some specific gear and techniques for a record to be ā€œworthyā€ of a release. If you need to obsess on the minutiae of the freq response of your kick that much, chances are high its just another ā€œTool Trackā€ which has zero musicality/ideas and will be forgotten by the next generation of DJs…

Nice one on this very topic by @James_Orvis:

Personally, I’ve got no problem with the Syntakt kicks. I generally obsess way more over snares. Not very techno, I know

Thanks for sharing! I’ll be buying these methinks. The fact these are all tuned to the same ā€œkeyā€ makes em quite useful

EDIT: for some reason, the .zip comes down corrupted. I’ll try again later with a proper computer…

I’ve been rinsing my own kicks from this pack for techno and electro since I made em :magic_wand:

I’m a snare man as well! Think it depends on genre as I make a lot of electro the snare is really important.

Syntakt is great for kick drums

Thanks, got it to unzip now!

cheers

Just coming back to this to give big ups to Mr Orvis. Some very impressive kicks in your sound pack! Have been checking them with my PA at the cave and some of these are so nicely dialed in they require nothing to sound ā€œrecord readyā€. Adding just a hair of outboard compression and it gets serious real fast. Kudos!

If you ever get around to releasing that snare pack, I’ll be sure to check it out ASAP

thanks

Thanks for the kind words mate glad you like em! I used a treated room plus my sub pac to get them dialled in just right so they are level and full in the low end :raised_hands: Just prepping for a gig and when I’m back in November I will start putting together more packs for Syntakt like this

Yeah, I’ve even gotten some of my dawless tracks signed by labels and several of my dawless tracks have been played by other DJs in their sets and also on radio channels, podcasts and so on. So one can definitely achieve it, if one wants to do so. And those aforementioned tracks are indeed ā€œjustā€ stereo recordings (LUFS were handled inside the DAW, but nothing else). Also I don’t have a studio full of expensive gear, just a corner in a small work room with some well thought out purchases.

Also related to the actual topic of this thread: I almost exclusively use Syntakt for my kicks nowadays.

I have a video on Syntakt kicks as well. To summarise it quickly: Add low frequency resonance bump, use LFO 1 as an extra envelope, use LFO 2 as an FM transient. Profit
