Incredibly clever and somewhat deranged choice to open with a cover of tighten up on soul train, almost immediately proclaiming that they’re the new number one in a caricature accent during a time of serious fearmongering about Japan’s rise as a technological and economic superpower. And the crowd eats it up!
Leave it to YMO to deliver something that’s charming, comedic, thought provoking, and legitimately just a great performance. I think the announcer even brings up punk later knowing what the band just did is SUPER punk. Way too cool…

I just viewed my spotify wrap up for 2023 and I’m in the top 0.1% for YMO. I only discovered them at the end of 2022 and they’ve been on constant rotation since then, especially BGM, technodelic, and neuromantic, which are absolute masterpieces. When I first heard the song Music Plans from BGM, I thought that this is exactly the kind of music I’ve been trying to make for years, but YMO already absolutely nailed it in the early 80s. It’s kinda baffling that it took me this long to find out about them, but I’m very glad I did.
