Yamaha SEQTRAK

I mean yes, but it also kills the portability to a degree, where it’s not a "have it in the bag just in case) thing … (and with its size it already barely is)

Still, great that it’s possible.
That means recording through the interface, preparing samples in koala and then loading it into the drums is a feasible workaround for it.
I’m content with that.

I guess it’s like the Octatrack. You play it with midi and it records pitch locks. Which means you can sequence it manually.

This is proving to be a very flexible box. Hahaha pun intended. Both literally and metaphorically:))

Bananas how many folks across the interwebz have commented that the Seqtrak is too big lol

It is almost exact width of OT, and about 1 inch high.

sounds ideal to me

Same.

can depends on usecase.
For taking it with the intend to perform somewhere?
Sure.
For having it in the car if spontaneous the time? Sure.
As a studio module? Yeah. As a doodling on the sofa? That works well.

One bag traveling? Having it in your daily backpack?
Using it on the train or bus? On a hike? Using it without a desk?

You see, depends what type of “portable” people want.

Just a quick heads up on quality control. Mine arrived this evening, so I tried the keys to check for the problem I saw reported above. Mine has the same issue, one of the seven audition keys – the one below the record button – works once in every three or four presses. it’s back in the box, will go back to Anderton’s, and I don’t think I’ll be risking it again. Shame to see this from such a big company. Dx7 was my first keyboard after all. Oh well. I’ve been saving my pennies for awhile. Maybe I should see this as a sign to go for the OP-1 field!

Sooooo many manufacturers try to tempt us with “chord mode” full of chords they decided…and so few let you quickly just set your own so you can keep focusing on making a song. That’s why I love my Korg M3 Desktop module…huge chunky user chord pads always ready to be set up.

Glad to hear this. That’s quite nice.

can’t find anything on how wonderful the sample based workflow is at all on the SeqTrak.

There are plenty of one bag travel bags that would fit your stuff + this portable device. Same with a backpack. I could totally use this on a train or bus. Wouldn’t take it on a hike, because I’m hiking. Could totally use it without a desk. To each their own though!

Just a heads up, as there was some confusion - you can import samples into the synth tracks, with all the AWM2 synthesis parameters - the only caveat (and I may be mistaken) is they can only be monophonic. I tried to set some to poly but so far it won’t have it.

I think the Sampler is the weak link on the package. Its quite dated in what it can do. But maybe with firmware it will improve.

Hmm, that’s three of us now with issues, and only four of us have it in our hands!!

As it’s the same key with each of us it sounds like it could be a design flaw rather than just random Quality Control Issues.

@darenager when you opened it up did you notice any cables/components around/under that key that could prevent the switch making contact unless firmly pressed in the centre?

Honestly I’m glad to be returning mine. I’ve had a good play and I think it’s a terrible design and just not fun to use.

One thing that I really don’t like is that it’s so light that pushing the buttons makes it move across the table. In fact, I reckon the artists in those Yamaha demo videos might have had it stuck to the table to prevent it moving. I think side/top buttons work well on a hand held device but on a box this size they’re just annoying. You have to hold it on the opposite side to stop it sliding across the table while pushing the buttons.

I think Yamaha have made a mistake with this one.

It’s a really personal thing: there are people having a 40l “one bag” and others having a day bag of 15l. People with bigger frames usually have bigger bags.

I’m having my work bag with me most of the time, and tried to squeeze work notebook, Bluetooth headset, charger, clothes, small water bottle for a weekend into that bag.

Worked. Had barely space for a volca in there, was really full. I have tried to put stuff in it, something like an octatrack would barely fit, without having much else beside work equipment and it.

Buying groceries on the way home? Crap, that’s the space for a package of peppers. Maybe I need to fill my bag with dippers and stuff for the child?

You always CAN make it work. But the op1 is THE benchmark for size in portable workstation land. (Disregarding the opinion of it or the price difference). That’s what people compare it to. That one can fit 2.8 times into this space.

The question is: is it a device that fits into my normal comfort zone/life, or is it one where I need to make concessions for it.

One of the great successes of the op1z was that people had it with them, because it was a no brainer. In size and magic moments happened. It’s a life first, music second mindset. The bigger the gear, the more commitment to the music side you have to have.

I’ve seen people bring guitars onto hikes. I would not argue that it fits like other gear on a hiking bag, so it’s “portable”.

I got more philosophical there, but I think you get the jist.

(Oh, and depends what bus, this would work, I was more thinking of the octatrack there. I would find it lovely to compose after the hike some up there before going to sleep. (Multi day hikes exist).

But if you record a sample is it immediately available to the synth?
Or you need the app?

No I didn’t - I notice on mine the lower key on the left (step key 9) occasionally gets stuck down, so 4 for 4 now

I am not too worried as it is covered by warranty, so if it gets worse I will contact Yamaha or Andertons.

I don’t know I have not sampled yet. I transferred via the computer app.

Ah, that was you
Kinda my point: a really subjective thing.
I know the discussions from the gaming space, perfect to hold for some, torture with cramps for others.

But I got into rambling, sorry.
I liked the size when I tried the op1 (never owned, price)
But with the t6 mixer they overdid it slightly.

I hear ya. I’m not trying to drag this out any longer even though I’m about to say something that might drag it out longer lol —

I don’t think it’s subjective that the OP-1 is too short to fit across your lap or the sun easily washes out the screen. Those are just facts based on the design.
