Would you buy a 2nd hand OT with a broken USB port?

So I’ve seen a OT locally with a broken USB port…
I figured that it shouldnt matter much as the OT doesnt support OB anyway.
Is there something I’m missing here?
OS updates, sample transfer etc (I have a CF card reader in the computer so not super concerned with the sample transfer, unless the sample app preps the samples for the OT in some way).
Thanks…

I would. But thats me. And could probably fix it. You could live without USB; and rely purely on the CF crad for all your transfers etc.

How much we talking here?

Elektron would sell the USB socket as a spare part for a few dollars–they all will break sooner or later
Its a common out of warranty repair on Pioneer DJ products --replace USB socket

Not that much cheaper than others, 100AUD, maybe 200AUD if he was willing to go down on price.

Then I’d pass a ~$100 less then market. Mind you I use the USB very heavily as well… not worth any potential heartache at that little of a discount, no?

If it were like half price of usual used price I’d say go for it, that’s about what it would be worth, but at only $100 discount it isn’t worth it.

Probably worth mentioning thats AUS dollars too, so like $70 USD.

Yeah I was thinking that the USB might be a sign of future issues

Don’t do it. If that part’s broken, something else is lurking around the corner.

Totally would not. How did the USB port break and is that indicative of the way it was used?

The USB port isn’t really needed provided you have a CF reader and a comp.

Still I think it being broken idicates a pattern of abuse, even if it was an accident.

Mind you, I brought my lil Octapony…

I’d inspect it on sight. Quite easy to repair that USB-port but as stated above: how did it break? Tell em to boy off your bad thought with a 200 discount and go for it :sunglasses:

I’d go for it for a 250 $ discount.

I wouldn’t do it, just because of what I have read about the CF card reader pins breaking easily when card is reinserted. And that’s a big expensive repair cuz the reader is soldered to the motherboard (from what I know)

yes thats a good point… i would be removing it constantly… would be a pain to break it

Contact Elektron support to see how much the repair would cost, double that figure, and reduce the price by that much. The additional reduction is your risk fee. Also allow for repair postage costs.

FWIW I have never connected my OT to USB because my OT and computer are in different rooms and I’m lazy, so I have always removed the CF card and put it in a reader, never had any problems with broken pins in 7 years, just don’t ram it in like a big clumsy impatient numpty and it will be fine.

Edit - also use a reputable brand of card.

That’s so good to know. I have a lot of anxiety around removing and replacing my CF card!

No i wouldn’t. Especially if the discount is that low. But that’s me. Maybe if you can test the unit or you know the guy in person. But honestly i would rather wait and save money until you can afford a new one.

I would not - you don’t know why its not working - the main board might be broken as well.
If the usb is not working, it might mean it was shorted or whatever what might damaged other circuits even its not obvious…
