Want to get an OT again, someone is selling a mk1 not sure if worth it or save up for mk2?
They are the same machine, except the mk2 has some extra buttons. If it’s a good price I’d go for it.
What is a good price you reckon is good…
The price you are willing to pay for it.
Plus or minus 700 is a good price.
I’d also look close at them for heavy use.
Contact the owner and ask if it has ever been repaired, and question them about any noticeable blemishes.
I’ve been looking for another OT and A4.
I have a price range in mind and know a few things to look for.
For example I spotted and A4 and asked the owner if the buttons were scuffed from heavy use, or it was just gunk build up that could be wiped off.
It would let me know if he was mashing on it wildly or just has really dirty hands.
Either one would be informative.
If they’ve been using a non Elektron power supply, I would question the owner about it.
Not everyone takes care of gear the same, and some are willing to take bigger risks.
MKI’s that haven’t been used much, just sitting in a box in someone’s closet, should have a really good amount of life in them.
New or old, some elektrons break, nevertheless Elektron fixes them well and it doesn’t cost a fortune. Even if a mother board get’s replaced.
When looking at pics closely, I have seen ones listed as “Mint” that have been heavily used. Some as excellent or good that look pristine.

Thanks for that, just wondering since I had a mk1 years ago, then 2 which I sold and now looking to nab one back but I do prefer the original trigs on the mk1
Keep in mind that if the octatrack 3 actually happens (as people are convinced that it will), the DAY it is announced, OT mkII prices will drop $100 minimum, OT mkI prices? maybe even more than that.
Q4 of the fiscal year is still 6 months away and thus far elektron has only dropped a reinventing of a prior product in the heat +FX. I’m convinced something else will come along this year, even if it’s not a mkIII, you might try gelling with the gear you have until you’re sure you can’t save several hundred bucks on an OT, at which point even if it doesn’t come, you will be confident about still wanting one.
I see OT mkI between 600-800, OT mkII between 840 - 1100 for the grey variety. I wouldn’t pay attention to any listed at a greater cost and I would severely scrutinize what may be wrong with those listed at a lower cost. If You can potentially pick up a mkI for 400-500 by waiting a few months (to me) I’m patient enough to wait. But there’s nothing to stop you if you want one, especially if you have the funds to do so or you can liquidate something you own in order to make the purchase out to be, financially speaking, a wash.
Model: Quadratrack
that’s what we’re all banking on
although that’s only half an octatrack
so is that actually a digitakt mkII?
I god my MKI about a month before the MKII was announced and the only thing I have ever regretted is paying $1200 when Sweetwater was selling them new for $800 a few weeks later.
I’ve never missed the extra headroom or OLED of the MKII and the button layout looks less ergonomic even if it’s more accessible.
is the ot mk3 a rumor?
MK3 is a wish not a rumor.
I would not be surprised that Elektron would release a new box which replace the OT in the future ( few years ) keeping most of the functionality but with a reworked workflow.
It’s difficult to keep a box with the engineer and part available for more than ten years. At some point, you begin to loose in-house skills and can’t upgrade the software because it’s optimized at max.
Mk1 is a good thing for people not so sure about liking this unit.
The MKII and the AK has a wee bit different distortion circuit.
After trying those out I prefer them.
It works better especially turning left, and gives a wider range of what that component is supposed to do.
The MKIL and AK have a bit better bass response as well.
Those are the only real differences.
Nevertheless I still want another MKI
Yeah guy offered it to me for $670,not sure its that good after looking at the reverb prices
It´s always worth to try an OT. If you don´t like it, it looks cool on the desk and in b&w shots, more so than the Mk2.
A decade after Roland’s 808 came out, people were hanging around studios wondering if they’re still worth it.
Mk1 works. I don’t miss anything the mk2 offers. If the price is right for you, go for it
…either way, it remains THE one and only device for all computerbackground musicians that don’t wanna perform with computers…
even push3 won’t make a real difference…
and no…a next gen octatrack is, of course and by no means, just a rumour…
end of 23, or early 24 at last, it will come around…
but no ot, no matter if mk1 or mk2, will ever drop under 600 bux in 2nd hand pricetags…no worries…
All the tips regarding the condition of the unit are great advice. In addition to that I would mention that it’s not too hard to ask the seller to boot it up in test mode for you – you just hold down FUNC while powering it on. I bought an Analog Four MK1 recently and the seller sent me a short video of the test mode and it gave me some peace of mind.
And to answer the question about it being worth it: yes, totally. I think the MK1 also looks cooler.
