Looks like I’ve managed to reclaim my old Genelec sub!
The problem I’ve always found when working with subs though, is that every time I adjust the volume of my stereo monitors, I need to re-calibrate the level of my sub, using a reference track.
Sounds strange. Are you shure you are not expecting to hear the sub more that you should? So if you listen at higher volumes it sounds good, but kind of dissapear at lower levels?
I have the Genelec GLM series so it calibrates automatically. But i was a little surprised of how little i noticed the sub when set up. It just sounded as a part of the system. Not like all my friends with subs in their home cinema setups where you could always hear the excessive rumbling of the sub in the corner. hehe.
I use esi 10inch sub with e-mu pm5 nearfield, it is set and forget, u need to find the right place for your sub in your room, where it sounds best, and it doesn’t muffle your main monitors sound, but you get that soft defined sub. Too me it sounded like stereofield is getting deeper also. And yes, it sounds like there is no sub in room, everything cones out of the main speakers in front of you.
So i think the place you have your sub might be better than the current one.
it’s basically a pure heaven to free up the Monitors from all that rumbling and even at low volumes a Sub gives that complete feeling of a sound, mostly not noticeable in hearing but feeling!
using an end of 90s, passive Sub with a big and heavy glass cover, soon to change the inner speakers to something more accurate.
I did that last year. Going from some home stereo BW602 from 1998 to new Genelecs was a hard decision. Newer spent that much in one go on a hobby. No regrets, but i sure wouldnt do that this year…
