Working with sub-woofers

Looks like I’ve managed to reclaim my old Genelec sub!

The problem I’ve always found when working with subs though, is that every time I adjust the volume of my stereo monitors, I need to re-calibrate the level of my sub, using a reference track.

Any thoughts on better / easier ways of working?

Sounds strange. Are you shure you are not expecting to hear the sub more that you should? So if you listen at higher volumes it sounds good, but kind of dissapear at lower levels?

I have the Genelec GLM series so it calibrates automatically. But i was a little surprised of how little i noticed the sub when set up. It just sounded as a part of the system. Not like all my friends with subs in their home cinema setups where you could always hear the excessive rumbling of the sub in the corner. hehe.

In my case, I don’t have Genelec speakers to send a signal to the sub. I’m using some old Mackie active monitors.

So, to drive the sub, I’m setting up an extra output from my RME Multifaces.

The sub is an old Genelec 1091a and the speakers are old Mackie HR624s.

Not a perfect match, but the sub definitely fills that low-end gap, so that I get a better idea of what’s happening at the low end.

Without the Sub, I’ve previously been switching to a Roland BA-330. That gives me a better idea of what things sound like on a PA system.

I use esi 10inch sub with e-mu pm5 nearfield, it is set and forget, u need to find the right place for your sub in your room, where it sounds best, and it doesn’t muffle your main monitors sound, but you get that soft defined sub. Too me it sounded like stereofield is getting deeper also. And yes, it sounds like there is no sub in room, everything cones out of the main speakers in front of you.
So i think the place you have your sub might be better than the current one.

felt the same, really.

it’s basically a pure heaven to free up the Monitors from all that rumbling and even at low volumes a Sub gives that complete feeling of a sound, mostly not noticeable in hearing but feeling!

using an end of 90s, passive Sub with a big and heavy glass cover, soon to change the inner speakers to something more accurate.

time has beaten the inner foam

There’s one other possibility, I have an old Behringer rack-mount speaker distribution unit, but it means another ADC/DAC stage.

Ahh, that explains the difference when changing levels. I guess they have different input sensitivity, so setting them up correct might be hard.

Sell the Mackies and buy some old Genelecs to match the sub. hehe

In an ideal world, I’d spend £3k on new monitors, but that’s not going to happen.

I did that last year. Going from some home stereo BW602 from 1998 to new Genelecs was a hard decision. Newer spent that much in one go on a hobby. No regrets, but i sure wouldnt do that this year…
