Will there be Octatrack MK3 anytime soon?

Frantically googling synonyms for “subscription service”

I work with Elektron from time to time both personally and as a marketing producer for a synth shop in Seattle (blogs/videos). I beta test firmwares and trial new hardware but I’ve yet to see anything even remotely hinting at a new Octatrack. I’ve brought it up with the US brand manager countless times and asked the Elektron CEO (very likable person btw) directly at NAMM 2023. I am under NDA with any real info, but I am being completely honest; I’ve heard nothing except ‘we know everyone wants one’.

I think 2024 will definitely see a MK3. It will be an iteration of the existing one with triangle buttons and brown colour. And 2 added shortcuts. It will sell for only 1999$ and a special white edition KIND OF ANNIVERSARY will sell for a mere 2499$. Still 83Mb Ram though.

Joke aside, we still have yet to see a real MK2.

Taking what was said at face value, it seems Octatrack may or may not be the name of the new sampling flagship and it probably won’t have every feature, while it will add others.

Yes… Everyone wants one

Don’t give them ideas :grimacing:

Honestly, I think we will get specialized smaller boxes so you can collect 'em all.

I don’t think Elektron will ever again release one single box in the complexity from lets say an analog four/rytm or Octatrack again.

So my bet is: No Octatrack. Perhaps a crippled looper or something. But not a thing you need to open the manual.

It’s when threads take turns like this that Elektronauts is at its best :joy:

I still get pissed at myself for scoffing about the anniversary edition. I even put one in the basket before stupidly thinking “don’t be mad, it’s just a couple of red buttons - what a joke”. Well the jokes on me now as in hindsight, I would love to own one.

Anyway, keep fanning the mk3/v2 dreams. A true sequel device would be incredible to see.

IMO there might be Octatrack 2 one day, but not a MK3, the technology Octatrack is built on is old, we know Overbridge isn’t coming to Octatrack and every other modern Elektron machine is Overbridge enabled, so probably a massive hardware redesign is needed, so then new OS needs to be written, as is new functions, old probably won’t work by just copy pasting, so need to rewrite those too, also maybe add a bit more modern twist…basically it’s almost the same as doing whole new machine from scratch.

If there isn’t a new flagship device on the way, you have to wonder about the negative business thinking behind not doing one. The Octatrack is one of the most iconic pieces of hardware ever released. A proper sequel to it (if done well) would not only sell really well but give the Elektron brand as a whole a massive boost. That boost would naturally permeate through all its other devices, as there would be a renewed buzz around Elektron. I’m sure the R&D costs for a new Octatrack would be big, but the rewards are potentially huge. I’m baffled why there isn’t one already, tbh.

That’s been my thought for quite some time now. A proper “sequel”. Likely won’t even wear the Octatrack name but will share some of the same DNA

Definitely I think any “OT3” will need to be a significant departure and not be shackled to current conventions.

They can’t offer backwards compatibility and offer an improved user experience at the same time.

I don’t know if I would say it’s negative business. Purely from a business POV (not what I or many others necessarily want), I think it makes more sense for Elektron to keep pumping out smaller, less expensive boxes. Big and expensive flagships are great, but they’re also big and expensive (keyword being expensive), and that’s usually worse for business, in addition to the added R&D costs for producing devices like that as you mentioned.
