Add another 50-60 for an RK-002 and you can send euclidean sequences from one DT to the other!
It’s quite incredible really. The DT1 got so many updates it’s almost unrecognizable from when it was first released. Still expecting more is just very very disconnected.
And as always: buy a piece of kit for what it is, not what it could be or what you want it to be.
Yeah, 1.50 alone was a legendary update. It was like Digitakt Christmas
I am not sure i agree with this reasoning.
It seems to be that the trend of a large portion of even major manufacturers in the last years is that they update their harware with features. This makes the products stay relevant with the competition.
It is not a matter that manufacturers are beeing overly “kind” and “giving” to their loyal customers. I think it is a way to get more milage out of a product that is already in the production line instead of producing multiple products that would have these various “updates” simultaneously where some of them would fail in sale numbers ( i believe this is cutting production costs to a minimum).
I also think this policy of updating and upgrating works kind of like the loyalty member cards that brands in general have. You know that when you buy an elektron box you are going to have some upgrades along the line, this i think is a good marketing strategy and is certainly worth considering when you buy a product.
Another thought i had about this DT2 release is that previous elektron boxes that have been discontinued all had something unique about them that made them not lose value and even beeing sought after (hence the second hand prices of the monomachine f.e). DT 2 blew the DT 1 out of the water. So i dont see a reason for the resale price to go any higher. DT2 does everything DT1 does only better. You can argue the differences among Analog MK1 and MK2 but these are minor and updates work more or less on both models (correct if i am wrong).
I do not have a gripe i have the DT for some years now and enjoy it much. For an updated machine like the DT2 i dont see a way how the resale value of DT1 could have been be saved. I just feel bad for people who bought DT1 recently (maybe a warning could be enough).
Maybe elektron could have a return for a discount type policy like Polyend have with one of their boxes wich was upgrated ( if i remember correctly).
Sorry for the long post…
Except that in this case it appears (though not confirmed) that Elektron will never produce another DT1 ?
This is not true. The different versions of Machinedrum and Monomachine were pretty similar to what happened with DTII (especially for the Machinedrum with the latest version), same case with Analog Heat +FX.
Digitakt is surely one of the Elektron’s devices that got the most love and the greatest firmware updates. I would be very bitter to read your comment if I was a part of the Elektron team.
I stand corrected i never owned one. Either way i do not see the resale value ever getting much higher than what it is now
I bought a used car/microwave/toaster/coffee maker/etc. some years back for a decent price and have been getting great use out of it since then. The manufacturers even provided many unexpected software updates that added greater functionality to it. That was not the reason I bought the product in the first place but I’m very grateful that they did this.
But now I see that they’ve bought out an updated version of the product with even more features and haven’t given us owners of the older model any of these new features like heated seats/milk-frother/self-cleaning/etc.
How dare they!
Of course, you cannot compare the resale value of a 1 week discontinued device with the resale value of a 8 years discontinued device
(and the earlier versions of the Machidrum and Monomachine are still way cheaper than the last one)
I hope we get the Master Drive, Comp Routing and Prepare Mutes for the OG! That’s the only thing I am really missing. will keep my OG for live Performance until Elektron will give us a global Mix/FX feature on the DT2! Enjoying the DT2 but its not as intuitive to use as the OG at all with all those pages.
The DT2 box is only reasonable since the old one could not handle much more. I do not have a gripe. I am not saying that. I only wanted to point out that the updates for a machine are not purely out of the manufacturers good heart, they are also part of a sales “staying up to date with the competion” strategy.
That’s fair enough, and my reply was’t directed at you it was just the overall tone I was getting from the thread tbh.
Patronising mode: think less about the motivations of others, let alone a company in Sweden. It’ll make you a happier person overall, I promise!
A middle finger is quite offensive. I think you are mistaken here, DT got over 7 years many new features and improvements for free and there was no promise on this features. There may be bug fixes, but you cannot expect to invest many resources in backporting features to an old plattform (since HW differs quite a bit). You always have to consider that Elektron is a tiny company with ~50 employees — some people here have really unrealistic expectations of what a such a small company can deliver. Develop a new product per year, plus update the current ones (BTW: @Elektron its time for a new firmware update for Syntax, please
) is already a great achievement for a small company.
i guess the same procedure of updates will come to the digitakt 2, that will make it quite a different machine in the future.
this will be the time when some people want to grab the digitakt 1 for a more simple, streamlined approach to drums.
and ill say it again, its so cool that you can load dt1 projects to the dt2!!!
i will keep the digitakt 1 for shure, and will most likely get the digitakt 2 next. i have different uses for both machines.
something i read often, but not support anymore is, that people should be happy with the features they got when they bought the device. for some (simpler) devices it might be true. but not for things that have more capable cpus inside.
the industry changed, and companies need to throw stuff on the market to be able to survive. which makes it hard to implement everything they have planned, bugfree from the start.
and when i buy a product from elektron or 1010music for example i expect new features in the future
and this point also speaks for keeping the digitakt 1. this machine is finished, and i dont have to think about firmware updates, look into forums or feature creep the company. i can just make music with it
dont forget, the 303 never got any updates and it helped creating a whole genre. but those times were simpler…
My take is that if they were gonna update the DT1 with features from the DT2 they would have released the firmware update along with the DT2.
That wouldn’t make sense. If any features from dtII are imported it will be some time to avoid affecting sales
Yeah, that’s what I expected in line with the previous MKII launches, but this one is slightly different on a lot of levels. Probably wouldn’t have made much sense to give a lot of people an incentive not to upgrade at this stage while there isn’t a massive leap in the firmware between the generations.
Possibly the launch might have been pulled forward due to leaks as well, so maybe there might be something in the near future. I’m not sure why I think this, but I still suspect there will be a capstone update for the OG with euclidean and some modest tweaks, possibly alongside the first big update for the new one where it gets stuff that could never come to the OG.
And once DT1 is discontinued there is no reason for them to spend development time working on it, as it will not lead to any more sales. I am looking at the Analog series, whose MK1 always received firmware updates at the same time as the MK2.
