Will new tariffs raise synthesizer/gear prices?

That’s very possible. What I’m getting at is that the economic decisions for US firms like Novation or DSI or Moog will not the same as those for Arturia or Behringer, at least in the near future. I agree the market is a bit saturated at present and no manufacturer would want to launch expensive new flagships into a recession or depression. But I do not think the economic pain will be so evenly distributed as in previous economic shocks.

I will be doing some more market research on this (not to win arguments in the thread, for business reasons) so if I get any useful insights on market proportions and share of different device classes I’ll share it here.

It’s probably worth noting here that Novation are British, with most manufacturing done in China.

The only thing that really matters here, is whether or not these tariffs could have any significant impact on the intended launch date of our precious and highly anticipated Tonverk!

Massive 3 hour vid from Gamers Nexus, it’s focused on PC stuff but a lot of this will probably apply to the music/audio gear market too -

Lots of interviews with manufacturers where they break down how this affects them.

Anyone else think that these tariffs will be reversed shortly after being implemented? I somehow don’t believe Trump will be allowed to destroy the US economy

Strongly recommend this. When i saw ‘3 hour gamer video’ I rolled my eyes expecting the worst of youtube, but this is really high quality no-fluff journalism. I learned a lot. Even though I had prior economics education hearing business people break down the numbers all the way through the supply chain (and with comparison to other economic upsets of the past) brought a lot of abstract concepts into sharp focus.

Yeah if there was only one part that people should check out it’s the talk with HYTE, a PC case and components manufacturer, where they walk you through a couple of spreadsheets of their actual costs and profit margin per item, prior and post tariffs -

I’m very glad I did my studio upgrade before all of this.

I wonder how this affects Sequential who are owned by Focusrite PLC which is a UK company.

:crossed_fingers: my 10 year old RME HDSPe AIO lasts another 10 years!

I feel for the small boutique companies, I can see a lot of them going under. I wouldn’t be surprised if people start buying up loads of stock with the hope that some of these companies go bust so they can make a killing on reverb/ebay.

Doom loop spending! Don’t get fooled by fake wars kids.
Sorry, this is pretty real, but I’m wondering what is real anymore. Reality TV has taken over, and unfortunately the drama is real…

The EU has followed the US in raising tarrifs on Chinese imports. Not 145% but they annunced that they will raise tarifs. So prices will go up in Europe too.

Maybe this is not generalizable data, but I’ve noticed several of the used music categories I scan daily on Reverb and eBay seem to have jumped up by about 10% on sale and listing prices in the past week. Also seems that used market supply is trending downward. Can’t help but think it’s related - people are buying what they can now to sandbag against future increases.

Where did you read about this? All news reports seem to indicate the opposite to be true, eg EU won't decouple from China as condition for reaching trade deal with Trump | Euronews

Same. I couldn’t find anything backing that up.

That is not true.

EU will have to deal with the fact, that after US-tariffs products from china will flood other markets especially the EU cause the products need to go somewhere. Thatswhy products more likely will be cheaper cause they come in masses.
EU announced that they will have to deal with that and therefor is currently discussing import quotas.

The EU has been talkingbabout decoupling from China for yesrs now.

You’ll find extensive incidences of the EU president snd trade representatives on decoupling and on supposed overcapacity of chinese manufacturing.

in terms of actions the EU already imposed huge extra tarrifs ob Chinese EV since lasy year, despite complaints from European companies even.

The EU has steadily for years matched US barriers to Chinese solar panels by raising them in the EU too.

The EU has been stesdily for yesrs now raising non tarrif barriets to Chinese products by imposing “due diligence on supply chain” laws. Research that too.

The underlying issue is not that. Its that the EU has actually signed a formal agreemnt with the US/NATO to take synchronised policy action - not limited to military policy, but also stated are diplomatic and evonomic policy. .

“China” is not named as the target. “Russia” is not named as the target. But they are the only reason such agreements would be signed, that subjugate even economic policy.

This is not about any one president or not. This is their long term direction.

Because if there was a Trump issue, nothing stops the EU from sinply getting on and even taking advantage of the US pricing itself out of exporting to China. So if Moog or DSI is now twicecas expensive, the EU should be pushing to no tarifs so that Novation or UDO or Nord should be able to replace them in exporting to Chinese consunets. But thats not what the EU is doing.

Taking pronouncemts at face value is a mistake. The EU is in fact commited to flaying its own citizens financially and in sync with the US.

Dont expect cheap synths in Europe. And no its not being done to protect synth manufacturers in the EU.
