Does this count as electronic music? Is this not singing?
Released just this month
The line between electronic and pop blurred a long time ago. Animal collective from 2008 to 2010 or so played entire sets with only samplers, synthesizers and of course vocals, but youād be hard pressed to call their music āelectronicāā¦
Moby had lots of vocal samples; lots of house producers used vocal samplesā¦What is electronic music again?
Yup. Ive got a mate who says she hates electronic music, yet one of her favourite bands is Lambā¦

All new music is electronic in some way nowadays. Either by way of instruments used, or by way of recording/production methods. So all the pop stuff with singing in it is electronic music. Shit, electric guitars⦠electric⦠guitarsā¦
Anyway.
because why would you taint something pure with words?
only half serious here. although lot of times the words can be offputting to me.
there are some great tracks with vocals but lots of tracks with vocals that sound fake to me. seems like the more āprofessionalā a singer is the less likely i`m to enjoy the singing. too much technique, too much pretending, not enough real emotions.
It gets in the way of the synth sounds
read an interview way back about conversation between aphex and squarepusher. something about getting radio play or mainstream hit type success and richard told tom to āput some vocals in your musicā and then tom came out with Go Plastic and Red Hot Car as the single.
aphex uses lotās of vocals in his music over the years but as samples and not necessarily singing.
human voice is something we immediately identify with and can sing in our heads even if itās not actually words.
edit: twitter doesnāt embed well.
While I love vocals in most music, I hate it in most electronic music. Mostly because I donāt like that kind of singing use in there. The same reason I am not a Rānāb guy and I donāt like lots of modern Hip Hop refrains.
I got a feeling that singing came back to electronic music in 2017, lots of artist were using microphones live at Berlin Atonal that year and years after that. I see it as a need for human touch so not everything is organised by the machines
Maybe weāre defining āelectronic musicā too narrowly to techno/house here, because:

This is an AMAZING time for music. Any style you would like to hear is being made right now by somebody out there and it aināt too hard to find.
Glad you tried und took a real effort.
This makes me hear the āRed Hot Carā lyrics in a new light, although I already sensed some irony in them, even though I couldnāt put my finger on the why.
Not surprisingly, I still canāt find a lyric video for this song. ![]()
Iām my DJing career, tracks with vocals were very few and far between. Vocals tend to interfere with the meditative/trance aspect. Theyāre invariably trite too. Ooohs and aaaahs are quite common though. I play progressive/psychedelic trance/techno and chill.
This is one I consider a classic, for use early in the night and/or as an opener.:
World music cross-overs work for me though. Vocals in says - arabic, mean that I donāt get hung up on the words.
Natacha Atlas anyone
Itās easy to become cynical and old and turn the headlights on, truth is there is a tonne of music with vocals. Maybe even more than not. Just go into any clothing store.
Me personally, for some reason I shied away from vocals over the years, even though I grew up singing a lot. Singing is so emotional, and I donāt always want to be emotional listening to music.
I like people who do interesting things with their voice and have their own style. Thereās a particular flavour going around at the moment I canāt quite pin down, kindāve half closing your mouth and barely getting the words out. Itās like a half-baked Toni Childās moment with vocals at the moment. I donāt really get it and kindāve canāt stand it, so that keeps me away from a lot of stuff rn.
The world is due for a lot of great, interesting singers though. I guess they are there, though, if I was a kid Iād probably have my champions. Betting the next generation is a lot more punk and shouty and some great bands come out. I prefer vocals in bands, I think.
āwords donāt come easyā

Plenty do, you and I just donāt listen to much of it, maybe?
Thereās so much music being done all the time, too much. Most of it weāll never ever hear, vocals or not.
I prefer music without vocals anyway, or just a short sample, not full songs with lyrics.
I had a phase of listening to mostly instrumental music. Then I discovered 70s prog where the vocals and instruments are mostly given the same priority in a song, and I started to loosen up a bit. Over the years Iāve become more and more interested in hearing vocals in electronic music, often to the point where if an album has one track with vocals, thatāll be the standout track for me. Lately Iāve also been rediscovering early 00s pop music and how interesting and unique it was.
Anyway, in my own music, Iāve tried to sing a few times but itās been disastrous. Iāve worked with other vocalists here and there but canāt find anyone who is into my music enough to be a longterm collaborator. Iām considering getting Vocaloid or similar but Iām shit at writing vocal melodies/lyrics!
