Which sequencer can randomize the ratchet count?

many sequencers allow probability for ratchets/retriggers = ratchet yes or no.
but very few (if any) allow randomizing the ratchet count = how many retriggers
but this would be a feature to bring sequences alive. Even more so, if one could “stretch” the total amount of ratchets to a certain length (like play 4 retriggers in 1/32th step or play 16 retriggers in 1 step) etc. combine this with a volume ramp and you could a great way to achieve ghost notes like playing, very musical.

Are there more EURORACK modules able to do this? The Metropolix doesn’t allow it, correct?

I’ll sometimes target retrig number on OT source page with an LFO: it can bring some nice movement like you say.

Not sure about the stock firmware but I do it on the Westlicht Performer with the Mebitek FW. It is Eurorack though but it has midi out.

Edit: turns out I just randomise the trig probability. I need to get my memory checked.

doesn’t the MEBITEK FW allow probability only of “retrig yes/no” but not the retrig count?

maybe midihub with a patch for note repeat? but guess it’s not a sequencer, can’t really program it…

I use ratcheting a lot on rytm with the velocity ramp, but it’s all manual work, the only thing I do to “randomize” is trig conditions

Oops you may be right there, my bad! Could have sworn it was a routable destination but I could be wrong. I’ll check when I’m at my desk.

i would have been surprised cause a got a Westlicht and made a request last week on github for this

This always seems to be the answer…

workaround i can think of with a digitakt, loop your sample playback, assign random lfo value to decay it will sort of randomize the retrig ratchet count ?

i’m sure there are workarounds, i just wondered why this parameter is on most sequencers not available, which have probability for ratchet yes/no . see it as a “general request” or “spreading an idea”. randomizing retrigger count and stretching them ( i think stretching is available on the METROPOLIX" ) would make such a difference.

Frap Tools Usta (a Eurorack sequencer) has a gate value, variation range, variation index for each gate output, as well as a stage colour (there are 16 “stages”, they can last longer than a clock tick). Gate stage colour choices represent length, muted, ratchet. If ratchet is chosen, value means the number of ratchets, variation range is +/- this value, variation index will be the probability of a change from the base value. This is not “stretching” in the exact fashion you described (though there may be ways to achieve that using external CV) but it’s still useful to bring more movement to sequences.

Can you do this on DT?
