What jointly produced gear do you dig, and what collaborations would you like to see?
Judging from demos and a play-around in a shop, I think the Roland - Studio Electronics SE-02 sounds ace with a lot of features, and packed into a portable package. For me it’s the most innovative thing that Roland has come up with in recent years.
And in the realm of fantasy, most of all I’d love to see an-all Swedish collaboration between Elektron and Nord!
My guess is collaborations are tricky with manufacturers not wanting to reveal too much of their processes, know-how, unique features etc.
I’d love to see more of those, treating hardware like a computer where developers can “plug-in” their own unique code. Give consumers more options and freedom.
If you read about the history of the synthesizer, drum machine or sampler, there are countless examples of collaborations. For one, MIDI was initiated by Roland founder and Dave Smith from Sequential.
I would say Elektron collaborating with just about everyone else, because I find a lot of other sequencers to be lacking.
But a more specific collaboration I would like to see would be Elektron and Make Noise. A west coast synth with a stellar sequencer. And then call Sinevibes to drop in some modulatable FX.
What about a collab between Moog and Sequentix. The Moog Sound with a killer Sequencer. Maybe the availibility of the units will be faster if Moog is in the game.
AMsynth (Bob Keeble) with Behringer on 2600 and 2500.
Axel Hartmann and lots of different companies, for instance and this is a surprise he worked on Playtime Engineering’s BlipBlox. But he also worked with Waldorf a lot, and others.
Exodus (Manuel Caballero) and Waldorf on the Kyra.
Waldorf and various others.
Arturia and Mutable Instruments on the MicroFreak (A. used open source code)
Behringer and GliGli on the PRO-800
Teenage Engineering and IKEA !
I’m just getting started here.
ADDED: Novation and Aphex Twin on the AFX Station. ADDED: Sequential and Tom Oberheim, on the OB-6. Right ?
I’m trying to recall exactly but Bob Moog did stuff for others early on. Help me remember exactly.
Leon Theremin did collabs several times too. He was the go to guy.
ADDED: Yeah Bob Moog early on helped Raymond Scott do the Clavivox, using circuitry he lifted (cloned ?) from the Theremin.
ADDED: And i see Tchu above, has another example with Moog.
