What's your latest purchase & what are your intentions with it? [pics ftw] (Part 2)

The main pro of the XD is incidentally its main con, a more polished Minilogue…

I owned a XD several years ago and I found it quiet mediocre… the OG I find inspiring… not sure if it is something in the design choices between the two or if my fundamental understanding of synthesizers has greatly increased…

Probably the truth is somewhere in between…

And definitely out there :sweat_smile: (SCNR)

Yes, that was my experience with the XD, too. Integration of all these digital components could have cost some supersonic mojo. I read that emulation in the design process of the OG was difficult because of mathematics incl. supersonic stuff in the analog realm that couldn’t be replicated digitally. (But forgot when and where I read it :confused: )

Great choice! :+1::+1:

I am not sure what you are trying to explain but the difference is that the XD has only 2 sharp two pole filter while the classic Minilogue has 1 2/4 low pass filter

This is the first big difference which will result in a different sound, good or bad is subjective

The second difference is that the XD has an additional digital oscillator selectable between noise, vpm and 1 upgradable by the user.

Also more effects on the XD

If you have them side by side the OG is a revelation (to my ears and brain sound processing) but the XD although exciting in specs is underwhelming.

Same is true for TB-303 and the plethora of clones. I have a Xoxbox from xoxshop, custom built by Andreas (I think the second owner) that is sound heavens. The one Xoxbox from mode machines I had here did not have that mojo (like all the other 19” clones over the years).

Another Example: The TR-707 when listened to directly just has something, I don’t know what. While the TR-626 although equipped with similar samples, direct outs etc. does not have that. Sounds like cardboard box. And I don’t know why. Objectively and spec-wise everything is sort of on par.

Same is true for digitakt vs octatrack (mkII). The digitakt sounds great, the octatrack has (to my ears) not that great sound of its own (yes, 20bit, proper gain staging etc. I’ve been through that phase). And that has nothing to do with HiFi - the Ensoniq EPS is so great, too, soundwise.

And don’t even start about FM-synths. It does not matter how many operators it has, it’s the particular built. The DX-100 is worth every cent they ask for. (But with the DX-100, the artifacts are easy to identify in comparison to others, that’s no mystery).

Will stop now :flushed::expressionless::shushing_face::sweat_smile::wink:

I’m not trying to explain anything. I’m simply stating that I found the XD mediocre and the OG not… and I don’t know if it is the design differences or my additional understanding of synthesis that I’ve acquired during the time between owning the XD and OG that is the culprit…

The answer is in the converter technology used in the 2 machines and the different filters

it is the type of converters designed in each machine which results in different sound i

I waited till BF hoping to get some sort of deal from Apple, but their specials were pretty lame. I went ahead and ordered this new MBP because I need to get rolling.

That really is a house number as the Germans would say :sweat_smile: („Das ist mal ne Hausnummer“)

Wishing much fun and great user experience. :+1::star_struck:

Update on the MC500: turns out it doesn’t respond when turned on. So I correct the purpose of purchase: upgrade electronic tinkering skills. Level 0: metering all voltages (before and after PSU, 5V, 12V outputs, checking fuses). So far: it is not the main switch :confused: 🥸:dizzy_face:‍:dizzy::flushed::sweat_smile:

About to do the same… may spring for the 64GB ram though. The no-upgrading thing really gets you in the upselling.

edit: The jerks! Haha!

Not mine but a present for my wife. All the same, my Octatrack is looking at me hungry for some samples…

Finally, a second hand Digitakt which I will get access to in a few weeks for my birthday.

As for what my intentions are with it, I hope for it to be my ‘everything’ box. My only other pieces of gear currently are a Circuit Tracks which I expect the Digitakt to replace, and a PreenFM2 which I will be sequencing using the Digitakt.

To complete my setup I eventually want a synth with a keyboard to do both midi and performance duties, and probably a rompler of some sort. I may sell the Circuit Tracks and use the money to buy something like a JV 1080 to both sequence from the Digitakt, and eventually the midi keyboard, and also to use it as sample fodder.
