What's your latest purchase & what are your intentions with it? [pics ftw] (Part 2)

Funny, I just noticed how much warmer this gets than the other two. Two processors, some FPGA, and a ton of analog parts crammed in there.

Well I can’t claim to be an expert on it…just a hardcore enthusiast.
Never tried SONG MODE, for example

Bytebeat Prismatic Spray adventure synth arrived today

Intentions are to: (1) learn about this ā€œbytebeatā€ business, (2) relive this futuristic version of my 8-bit past, (3) feed its output into :elan: / others, (4) enjoy the manual, (5) admire its excellent aesthetic, (6) watch its cool graphics while it makes sounds.

I think the ST has had the reputation of being a little extra studio heater for a while

My new Teenage OB-4 and Roland JX-08 both arrived today and really super fun together! Great sounds in small package battery powered setup. Still learning both but fun gear and can use anywhere along with my OP-1, TB03, TR-08 and SP 404 MK2 for ultimate portable gear.

I’ve never owned a turntable, but have been collecting vinyl for decades. Just obscurities, old industrial stuff, Mort Garson stuff, old techno, Tool and Meshuggah albums, etc. It’s not the 1200/1210 I wanted, but seems decent. I’ve got an Ortofon 2M Blue on the way. Got some nice powered monitors, and will be designing my own preamp sometime in the future. Anyway:

I’m curious what you did with it before this. Never played it? Took it to friends’ houses/studios?

My cousin has a listening room with stuff that I can’t afford. He even has difractals (sp?) from a prominent theater here in Seattle that was being updated for the millionth time on his walls. He installs acoustic treatments for high end home theaters here, so has hookups for lots of good things. I listen there sometimes, and have otherwise just collected until such time as I could direct some of my musical funds this way. Much of my collection is unopened.

Can’t wait to rip off all those proverbial ā€œscreen protectorsā€!!!

THIS I’m excited to see. I’m sure it’ll be beautiful and well-specced, given your module designs.

Obtained an Eventide Blackhole pedal on sale this morning.

I have been a huge fan of the VST version for electronic music, and wanted to add the effect to an all hardware setup. Plus, the Freeze function is great for creating drone sample content from various sound sources.

What: Sonicware SmplTrek
Intentions: Sending back for Money back, because

  • it has no undo,
  • no mute/unmute,
  • you can load midi but not save it and
  • the looper does not overdub
  • the clip launcher is completely different from what one might think (they combined a clip view with linear sequencing - each scene can be set to different number of bars and different repetitions - wich would be good for linear view - but
    • you cannot select different combinations of clips like in Ableton or with Akai Force.
  • you have to stop the sequencer for almost everything
  • you cannot alter a loaded drum kit - you have to load it in new and select edit, then save it again
  • you cannot turn off quantization
  • you cannot alter length of midi-notes after recording
  • the first note always gets missing when recording

The good was:

  • overall sound
  • no clicks in loops
  • polyphonic sampler and midi
  • sound of the FX
  • 5-pin-midi
  • audio in with sampling and mix in
  • edit with mixed step edit, live recording and matrix edit
  • Polymeter (clips can have different lengths, will be reset by end of scene though - like in Maschine)
  • batteries!!!

For starters the buttons click very well
If they finally build in jump marks and loops and maybe untracker like different lengths for columns for easy Detroit style techno - or an easier song mode (with mute/unmute status and number of repetitions like in the new song mode in Elektron’s digitakt, digitone and syntakt) - I’d use it much more. It really sounds great.

Those are some valid points. I am still on the fence. I like to see it as my Yamaha qy70 replacement, but it is not there yet. Maybe I will swap it for a roland sp 404 mk2, now that is has a step sequencer.

Wow… the list of things it cannot do.
