Way back when, watches used to be mechanical because there simply didn’t exist a technology that was portable and rugged enough to be carried around. Eventually, with the advent of digital watches and now smartwatches and phones, there is no practical reasons outside of very niche circumstances to use a mechanical watch (and for status reasons).
