I’m a big fan of the original, full size Mutable Instruments Marbles so I’d be tempted to get a 10hp clone like Antumbra Cara. You could even use it to remix a sequence from the v/o of your SV-1. Or maybe a Turing Machine for a different flavour of controllable/loopable random voltages.
oh! didn’t know it can process external CV, ha… Didn’t really like playing with Marbles in MiRack (Marbles can do cool stuffs though) but this feature could be very fun!
External CV processing
- An external CV can be recorded in the DEJA VU loop in place of internal random voltages.
- All transformations performed by the random voltage generator (looping, shuffling, spreading, transposition, quantization, lag-processing) can be performed on external voltages.
- TLDR: live remixing of external sequences!
Yeah its a sample and hold on steroids.
Last I checked the MiRack version didn’t allow access to nice features offered by “holding” the toggle buttons.
If you’re not into esoteric naming conventions and aesthetics, run away from modular!
I see the Dreadbox thing doesn’t have an LFO, and the two LFOs on the SV1 are limited. 1) The digital LFO retriggers on every gate signal.
2) The analogue LFO is non syncable and if you want to attenuate its output you have to use one of the two mixer channels.
Then again, with the SV-1 midimodule you can use the CC and Vel outputs to get 2 OT LFO’s as modulation sources.
Essentially you’ve got two inter-patchable monosynths, but only by patching and playing it for some time will you will get an idea of how you want to enhance / improve the rack’s functionality and or sonic capabilities with another modulation source, or logic or some sound shaping (waveshaper, wavefolder) modules.
For sequencing and modulating from the OT, the CV:OCD midi > CV (desktop) would give you 4 more CC to midi sources plus the ability to sequence both voices seperately from the OT.
A 10hp Random Sampler (aka marbles ffs) would be ace. I use one in pretty much all my MiRack patches.
Thanks!
Bit spendy. Will have to save up.
If it was mine and not specially with DIY in mind :
- 4hp > øchd add some LFO everywhere
- 10hp > Erica Synth Dual FX.
And back to the OT with more effect to spare ?
oh, that must be it then that’s why I didn’t remember that feature (Because I did check the manual). Anyway, now the hardware looks more interesting and even though I don’t really like small clones, I think Marbles would be fine as I don’t see myself turning knobs live much with it and more CV’ing.
It would be remiss of me not to mention Expert Sleepers Disting or Disting EX in the context of a small case as they can do so many things. The trade off is that they are very menu heavy and fairly deep so might not suitable for shallow cases.
It’s hard to beat the ergonomics of the original Marbles for tweakability but if space is limited, a smaller clone will do the job. After Later Audio also have a full size clone.
Have you had hands-on experience with both the full size and 12hp? Is there a big difference? I have a 12hp and while its not going anywhere anytime soon for lack of space, I play Marbles (Pachinko) a lot and Im wondering if I would get even more enjoyment with the full size. People on MW more or less seem happy with either…
my system is full (rackbrute 3u and 6u) but I had the plan to buy 4 Plaits and only got 2 so far so… I need a new case for them anyway (looking for reasons to expand my rack )
Erica Synths has a lot of modules with just 3 HP each.
Sequencers, Drum Synths, Distortion, EQ and what not

I haven’t tried the 12hp variant so I can’t compare unfortunately. I’m just a bit of a Mutable Instruments purist! Though I can appreciate the attraction of smaller clones - I own a Baker and Monsoon.
I feel that. Ive got OG Blades, Beads and Stages, but the Pachinko just fit so snug in 2x84.
Turing Machine and Volts expander. 10 and 4 HP respectively.
Mylar Melodies dies a live build video and another really good one coveing functionality of the main unit and each of the expanders.
By all accounts they’re relatively straight forward DIY builds too. On my wish list for when I next crave the heady mix of solder and burning skin fumes.
Orthogonal Devices ER-301.
Underrated suggestion. Seriously, it takes time to figure out what’s missing.
EDIT: I see you’ve had them for a while, but even having the 2 colocated and cross-patchable changes things and opens up possibilities.
Pico stuff, what modulation surce you use?
