Have you checked the NI forum? I think there’s a new version of Native Access which some people are complaining about - not sure if that one works without Rosetta. I’ve been avoiding it until now because I don’t want all the hassle. I hope NI get their shit together because I’ve got years worth of projects which use their stuff including some unfinished ones
i’m running native m1 Native access app, seems fine… no issues.
theres still no easy way to uninstall anything but its been like that since forever.
the basic google search for native access install brings up the page with M1/M2 specific downloads
https://www.native-instruments.com/en/support/downloads/
the apps info shows
Application (Apple silicon)
some of their older apps might not have been converted / abandoned but may other companies are doing the same.
Encoders underneath the display and buttons on top.
And ï.
Don’t know. With push some people disliked the encoders being above the display. Think this is one of those things where there’s really no way to satisfy everyone
Because it has less controls I’m hoping to be amazed that this will include a touchscreen.
But if that’s the case the encoders underneath would not be the best implementation.
It probably won’t be anything special display wise. (none of NI’s previous products were).
This all feels like a very lazy upgrade (if we can even call it that) but I hope I’m wrong of course.
I’m just here for what it means for the actual Maschine/Komplete software that powers it all. Hopefully there will be some news on that soon. If they release all new hardware and don’t update the software in a reasonable window they’ve lost me forever.
Theres just way too many newer and better supported options available to put up with their lazy BS.
Just tried again to make sure I was sane:
M1/M2 download link… open… drag to Applications… open app
“Installing dependencies”
“NTK Daemon requires Rosetta, Do you want to install it now?”
Click Cancel
“To open Native Access”, you need to install Rosetta. Do you want to install it now?"
Nope.
You’ll only see this on a clean system without Rosetta already installed, which can happen really easily over time with this installer or that installer.
I don’t think it’s Native Access that needs it. It’s NTK Daemon. But that’s even worse, as that’s just lazy, and represents everything I think about NI. It’s a license daemon. Those aren’t large, and aren’t crazy coded unless your devs suck. This isn’t Reaktor code.
Wouldn’t trust them with hundreds of dollars on hardware ‘hoping’ they’ll support it. They won’t.
Case in point: the flagship Massive X. Sure, it’s alright. I’ve been using it on my Intel for forever and had it on this one after they M1’d it. But it just feels so unfinished, particularly the browser, which is horrible IMHO. Can we use arrow keys to audition patches yet, like the entire rest of the world? Maybe they’ve done that one now; I quit watching, which tells me everything for myself anyway.
They’ve clearly lost a brain trust, and are being led by ‘does it work?’ business people (in the case of rosetta) who hear the devs answer ‘sort of, for now’ and then the business people go ‘go work on this other shiny, partially built thing instead’ --> I’ve lived this so many times in my career. It’s not a development team/company that’s healthy over there. And thoughtful/good/proud devs move on.
I agree with you that as you go through the weeds of Komplete it can all feel a bit like a house of cards at times.
Look at most other music companies - Arturia/uhe/brainworx = analog emulation, Soundtoys/baby audio = effects, even NI’s own iZotope or TDL/FabFilter = mixing/mastering. These companies benefit from doing one or two things really well. While it’s true that some of the synths in V Collection are old (just like some of the NI stock), there is a somewhat clear path towards upgrading. Each time you get a few new instruments and a few re-written ones. You know that sooner or later the whole collection will get some TLC. With NI, it’s clear where their emphasis is, but they maintain some highly outdated stuff to keep the Komplete show on the road. There’s no KK or Guitar Rig without the NI effects.
I feel like this is where the emphasis on doing lots of things has proven difficult for NI. I may have mentioned it earlier, but my view is that NI’s trump card to this day is samples & sampled instruments. Most people when push comes to shove would take Kontakt as a standalone instrument if they could keep only one thing from NI. I’d rather see them be the best of the bunch in that department than keeping unloved synths on life support. Falcon is growing in popularity and I would be concerned if I were NI that the one area they still have a major play in could be taken away by a smart dev team over at UVI.
I think the new keyboards (while important) need to come with a refreshed NKS and Komplete Kontrol browser at this point to make the experience a lot more easy for folks to get into.
What’s wrong with installing Rosetta ?
I must’ve done it ages ago and not realised because I’ve never had any issues with anything else.
Actually , that’s rhetorical question , I don’t actually care. We all control what goes on our pc/macs , it’s entirely up to you
I do think there are often other ways to install NI software or ultimately you may not want to.
The browser on Traktor has been a flickery mess for many years , I think the new beta / roadmap shows they’re using newer gfx tech so maybe that will set them up for other tools to revise their browsers and overall ux )
I cant install reaktor 5 anymore from Komplete 10, so i cant use a bunch of stuff, prism, razor… no i wont upgrade, there was nothing particulary intresting happening in the last years. I still use tracktor though, mostly because its usable without abo service.
At one point i will get some offline players. Hw has its advantages.
I don’t think there’s a competition concern while there’s been so much behind the scenes stuff, including being bought out. That buy-out will likely result in a restructuring and sell-off at some point.
Once different pieces of NI are sold off, we’ll just have to wait to see what’s left, but I’m guessing they’ll have a more narrow focus then.
As for Kontakt… I don’t think it’s NI that is behind the best libraries. They might partner with companies, but It could be they’re just providing a platform for content to be created and sold.
It’s a very flexible program, but not without weakness. Falcon is a decent option but I know there’s some strong feelings about ilok licensing (which I have and use) that might keep it from being an obvious Kontakt replacement.
I swear I’d be all over a maschine/komplete hybrid, I mean what’s not to like, one piece on your desktop that basically does the lot, okay it’s not super portable but thats what maschine mikro is for… the only other thing I see being a fly in the ointment is if it goes tits you lost your keys and pads if it has to go back but that’s a rarity nowadays, to be fair I’ve only ever had one piece of n.i. gear go sour on me and that was due to age not because it was bad quality…
I thought a brand new keys & pads instrument was a no-brainer. NI is well on the way to having enough Play instruments to make it its own bundle, with those simple 16 pad drum pad packs, and all the keys instruments. They already play nicely with something like a Launchkey, so to add in all the bells & whistles of the lights and a very large on-device screen would be very interesting. Also, that single screen design seems tailored to that chunky Play series design, with the 8 dials at the bottom being directly controlled by those macros on the device.
All the other big names like Arturia/Novation/Akai have proved pads & keys is a popular format. If NI was right that it’s better to keep them apart, I’d expect to see the others copying them, but more or less none have. The only 3 reasons I can see for not doing it is that a) the software is a bottleneck. If there is no new concept for Komplete Kontrol, then that may limit the hardware for now. Or b) NI genuinley belive that this is a bit different or allows them to deliver something at higher quality. And then again maybe c) as the slightly more cynical view goes - they basically you to buy pads and keys across 2 devices as a profit centre.
Im pretty sceptical about their motives but I can see how integrating komplete kontrol into maschine or vice versa could well be a nightmare for them, if we’re being honest the development of maschine as a platform has virtually ground to a halt these past years and I think anything like a mash up of the 2 would be a ground up proposition for them, I’d love to be proven wrong though, I’d probably sell everything I currently use if it ever came to pass…
Yeah that’s likely a big issue. My theory was that they’d use the play series to maybe sidestep that problem. I hear that at the moment for example, they are unable to have Maschine packs use Massive X for some reason and so they have to use the OG Massive for certain tasks. So yeah, it’s definitley an area where we could see a fairly standard tweak to the old standard for this iteration mark 3.
For this to be their “new” flagship it’s kinda behind what’s already available from Novation, Arturia, Akai and others. I would say the lack of Maschine integration puts it behind their own MK2 but yay big new screen nobody asked for. It has a computer inside but no use or even a hint at what that’s for. I presume it would be to run VSTs without Daw or Komplete but who knows?
Loopops summary is essentially this thread, wtf is eating NI? lol
In what way is it behind?
Is it just the Machine integration, or something else?
From the video the main area it’s lacking is Daw integration besides ignoring their own (almost) DAW Maschine.
Novations latest keyboards have super deep integration with major DAWs specifically the two I use Logic/Ableton. I’ve heard Arturia’s is pretty good too.
According to Loopop it looks like this just controls track volume, pan and transport. Pretty basic. No access to automation parameters or sends which is a head scratcher. Can’t even control tracks with the button shortcuts above the screen like the MK2. Another headscratcher but easy fix via firmware upgrade. Then again, it’s NI so they may never update it lol.
So this is basically a Komplete/Komplete Kontrol keyboard extension.
Fair enough. As long as they say that and just focus on doing that, I’m sure there’s a market for it.
They (NI) need to just say that kind of thing, instead of replying with things like ‘more to come on that later’ because they really do NOT do things, or take years to do them to the point you’ve moved on and forgotten they exist.
I personally don’t want deep integration with NI’s library in keyboard form that doesn’t seem to do much of anything else. NI is a tiny piece of what I use, and dwindling at that.
But, if I were a stage or gig or session musician for hire, for example, and just need to pull up something and play it, and no one cares where it’s coming from, this might be perfect. I can see its use.
