What other "Magical Synths" are there within reach?

Having just bought an OB6 following guidance from the great souls that frequent this forum, I’ve started to wonder what other Magical Synths are within reach.

Although only 3 days in, I have to say that the things I was told about this synth are thoroughly true to my ears: there really is something special about the sounds it makes.

I know £2,000 is a pretty impressive price tag (I bought a desktop version) but I’ve bought a few things for my music room that are around £1,000 so it wasn’t a barmy jump to buy the OB6. And, it’s worth every penny to my ears.

So, I am wondering:

What other Magical Synths exist with a similar price tag? I mean things that are simple to use and that sound beautiful (I know that’s subjective but let’s say that the consensus is pretty much that the sounds are rich and wonderful).

I am honestly thinking of selling every synth I have and only having 2 or 3 things if they were all of the quality of the OB6.

‘Magical’ describes the Waldorf M pretty well to me, I didn’t think I’d ever spend that kind of money on a synth until I heard it. I guess what it does isn’t for everyone though.

Actually, I had a Grandmother and really enjoyed it. I only got rid of it because it was the size of a small car and my room is relatively small.

I’ve never tried any Waldorf synths. I’ll take a look. :+1:t2:

Congrats on the OB-6. I’ve got one too, and agree that it has that magical something you just can’t put a finger on. BTW, don’t sleep on modulating that thing with external sources. Bypassing the limited architecture really opens the machine up and turns it into a beast. As for your original question, I’d say that most Sequentials seem to have that certain something. Also, the Digitone, while different, is within reach and can get to some brilliant places. Not quite the same league of magic as the OB, but still incredible. Every demo I hear of the Typhon also sounds like there’s some secret sauce going on. I’d love to hear one of these in person someday.

I’ve had both the Digitone and Typhon.

I agree, both of them are great instruments.

But, in my opinion, don’t frequent the same position in the league of synths as the OB6.

I will look at the other Sequential synths. If they have similar magic to the OB6 they are certainly worthy of my money and time.

Yeah, the Super 6 is an interesting machine.

I think the Pro 6 could be an option as it’s a desktop synth?

Prophet 5 for sure.

If you are referring to the Prophet 6, to me the Prophet 5 has more “magic” in the sound. And the Prophet 5 has a desktop module as well.

Maybe, though I’d be surprised if that was the only reason you would be interested in a Prophet 6.

I assume that’s what you meant because there’s no Pro 6. There’s a Pro 2 and Pro 3 and man those are very different…

There’s also a Prophet 5 desktop

Hmmmm. There’s a desktop Prophet 5?

:thinking::+1:t2:

Yeah I meant a Prophet 6. :grimacing:

I second the Vermona PerFourmer MKII.

And a 10.

It’s a nice synth. No real complaints. I was lucky enough to try it (keyboard version) in the same room as the keyboard OB-6. Would have had a hard time choosing between those two, if limited to just those two.

Prophet 5 - both keyboard and desktop - can be expanded to 10 voice polyphony. It might not matter though if you don’t like it
