What is saved with what?

I’ve had my AK 2 days now, and I’m loving it. I haven’t owned any Elektron gear before, so I’m finding the interface tricky… but slowly getting my head around it. I do find it logical, but just there’s a lot to remember. I have dipped in and out of the manual when necessary, but one thing I’d like to really get is - what saves what?!

I’d really like to compile a list of what parameters are saved in the different save options. So far, I’ve worked out (and I’m probably got it a bit wrong)

[PROJECT] Kit lists, patterns, songs

[PATTERN] Scale/length, trig positions, note data, trig locks, accents, mutes & slides. Anything else?

[TRACK] The same as pattern, but only the data for that track

[KIT] The sounds assigned to the tracks.

[SOUND] Use sound manager to save/copy sounds to empty slots.

[SONG] Chains… (I haven’t really looked into songs yet)

What I haven’t worked out yet, is which SAVE saves

  • the ‘mix’ settings
  • the ‘external in’ settings (this always seems to be resetting)

Also, if you modify a sound then save the kit - does it save a modified version without saving over the original sound from the main sound manager?

I know I should read the manual from front to back, and I eventually will, but any help I could get in these early stages would be appreciated!

Patterns also save what kit is being used on that pattern. So make sure you save the pattern with the specific kit you were working on because if you change kits before you change patterns, the pattern will autosave with the new kit. So you have to reload the pattern from it’s saved state (saves overwrite autosaves) to get the correct kit back.

Remarks in bold:

-PROJECT Kits (edit buffer and saved), patterns, songs, project sound pool (can be sound-locked)

-PATTERN Scale/length, trig positions, note data, trig locks, accents, mutes & slides. arpeggiator settings

-TRACK The same as pattern, but only the data for that track

-KIT dedicated sounds (no links) for each track. CV settings, FX settings

-SOUND Use sound manager to save sounds [b]to the project sound pool or the +drive

Both saved in the Kit

Yes, Kit sounds are completely separate from the sound pools. When you load a sound to a kit it practically makes a copy.

But most important is to know WHEN something is saved.

-PROJECT Power-cycle save edit buffer, needs to be saved manually

-PATTERN held in edit buffer, but saved when changing patterns, can also be saved manually

-TRACK- saved with the pattern

-KIT Power-cycle save edit buffer, needs to be saved manually. Edit buffers as well as saved kits are stored with the project. Note: there’s a setting in global which changes the kit loading behavior. When activated, the kit gets reloaded to the last saved state when you change to a pattern that has a different kit assigned.

-SOUND needs to be saved manually

Sorry I give up editing the post. I quoted your post correctly but the amateur looser board software keeps messing with the tags. what is this? the f*ing 90ies?

I could have written that post in HTML quicker…

Cheers man, that’s all really useful information! I’m always worrying about saving over stuff by accident or not saving stuff at all! I read some advice somewehre saying ‘don’t get too precious about stuff early on as you’ll likely lose it’ - probably good advice!

I’m loving the AK, it’s blown my mind as far as what it’s capable of, but definitely will take a bit of time to get my head around and remember all the functions.
